It was one of those rare commercials that later went on to become a huge chart hit. And now, more than half a century after it first aired, a new version of that iconic jingle is coming back to TV.
It's the campaign that told viewers "I'd like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony," and ended wth a pitch for Coke. The song proved so popular, a record with re-written lyrics was put out by the New Seekers and went to #1 in 1972.
Now CBS is set to show a brand new version of the ad, which - instead of taking place on a hilltop with a group of singers - will be perfpormed by "Average Americans" from across the U.S. The commercial will be part of the NCAA March Madness Championship game.
"Coca-Cola found its new singers for the song from all walks of life, says [Coke ad man Alex] Ames — another bid to show people of different backgrounds coming together. “It’s not a choir,” says Ames,. “These are teachers, musicians. random people” — about 30 in all. “It was very much not manufactured. It was them working through the song together.”
It's hard to say whether you'll be hearing this one again after it's done - it will be available after it airs only on Spotify. So unless you're on that platform or watching the game, you may not get to hear it. (Although I would be stunned if it didn't eventually turn up on YouTube, as well.)

I actually like the version in the 80's where the original 70's singers sing, but then their children appear singing.

'Average Americans'. 🤔
The definition today is far different than what was in place when the original version aired.
Nowadays, you're advised to be in the right categories in order to qualify. Refer to Fox News if you require clarification. 🤨
