Sex Scandals & Funny 820: No Laughing Matter?

I occasionally tune into Funny 820, usually when the other guys are in spot breaks. On Wednesday, I was surprised to hear Louis CK not once but twice at different times on the station, and I have to assume his stand-up bits are in regular rotation.

This despite the fact that the veteran comedian was only recently involved in an admitted sex scandal involving him openly pleasuring himself in front of some not very willing women. They’re still playing his stuff, even though both FX and Netflix recently cut all ties with him.

The same thing happened with Kathy Griffin, a comedian who I’ve never found even remotely amusing. She was axed from her lucrative New Year’s Eve CNN gig after a stupid stunt involving Donald Trump’s severed head. (Whatever you think of the current White House occupant, it was in bad taste.) Now she, too, is back in the rotation after some time away.

Bill Cosby, whose routines are considered classics, used to air at least once an hour on 820. But he hasn’t returned to the CHAM airwaves since the multiple sex assault/drugging allegations surfaced. And he’s never even technically admitted anything or been convicted, although he’s clearly a massive a-hole. And yet one U.S. outlet – Bounce TV, a subcarrier network aimed at African Americans - is now showing the NBC classic “The Cosby Show” on a nightly basis again after it was pulled from the schedule altogether.

Which leads me to wonder about how programmers make decisions on these scandal plagued-types. Why does one get played while the other gets permanently pulled? And does a scandal involving a comedian instantly mean his or her previous stuff that was once considered hilarious is suddenly not funny?

With all these accusations and admissions flying around – and it seems more coming every day - it can’t be easy to set a one-size-fits-all policy. I can’t quite decide what the right thing to do is here. How would you deal with these issues?

Re: Sex Scandals & Funny 820: No Laughing Matter?

I'm OK with them playing all of the guilty comedic parties...every last once of them.  At least until that horse's butt who occupies the oval office gets the boot.  As long as HE is OK to continue doing his 'thing'...they all should be allowed to keep on marchin'

Apparently it's OK to act out your locker room fantasies.  All you have to do is deny, deny, deny...everything.  Ya right!!!
