Under the Online News Act, the big tech giants are supposed to compensate Canadian media for using their news. But as most here know, Meta opted out of carrying any headlines to avoid the payments.
But according to the LITS - the Local Independent Stations - group, their headlines specific to a small region are showing up on Facebook and Instagram anyway and they want to be paid for it. So they're asking the CRTC to take action.
"The dossier includes a hyperlink posted on Facebook to a CHCH news report about a man who was seriously injured after being shot by police in Niagara...In its submission it observes that Meta seems to “periodically do a “clean-up” and take down links to news – after they have been up for a while.”
“This does not detract, however, from the fact that the links were made available, and fresh ones appear, therefore subjecting Meta to liability under the Act,” it says.

I have always felt that there is something untrustworthy of Meta and it’s “products” and I haven’t been able to figure out why, but I do think it is because Zuckerberg is a bit dodgy, so this type of thing doesn’t surprise me.

Good on CHCH.
I'm 26 years old, but I never get the big news headlines from influencers.
I do get my news from social media, but its mostly watching ctv, global, or chch videos or cp24 videos on youtube.
I do get my talk content from rebbel news thogh, but I know its not news, its opinions and right-leaning talk, I don't agree with some of what rebbel talks about such as there covid consperisies and pro trump content, but I generaly agree with there pro canada and pro jewish and israel content.
Most young cant tell the difference between a news headline and a news account on social media such as ctv or cbc, and a random influencer shouting there far-left or far-right opinions on the internet.
But maybe because I grew up listening to broadcast media and my dreamjob is being a broadcaster on am/fm radio or even on ami audio, I can tell, its the content and the way the host is speaking and delivering the information.
I cant tell the difference with writin content on websights, its not as easy with writing.

Meta blocking CHCH and other independent Canadian news stations

Canadian news orgs had it good - a new platform used by the masses that let them post links to their websites and generate lots of new traffic....all for free. Users loved it - re-sharing and engaging with the links. For many sites, this was the single biggest driver of traffic; many even hiring staff to maximize this new opportunity.
Then they blew it. Free advertising wasn't enough. They thought they should be paid to advertise.
It's too bad - I'd support local news over giants like Meta or Google any day, but lobbying tech-illiterate politicians in a desperate attempt at much needed revenue backfired spectacularly.
