He was best known as the star of "Dawson's Creek" but he also had a remarkable movie career. It's hard to say what else James Van Der Beek might have accomplished in his brief career. He died much too soon after battling colorectal cancer.
He took on many roles over his short life, but "Dawson's," which contained frank sex talk from young people, remains his most famous role.
"Set in the fictional town of Capeside, Massachusetts, the show premiered as a midseason replacement on Jan. 20, 1998, and ran for six seasons — the first four are set at Capeside High, freshman through senior years — through May 14, 2003.
Van Der Beek appeared on every one of the 128 episodes."
He was only 48.

I'm not sure what this says about the staying power of stardom or the lack of it. It's just sad that an actor who appeared in movies and for six years on a popular TV series comes to this at the end of his life. The fact his family needs a GoFundMe account is very unfortunate.

Wow, this is truly sad. I was never a Dawson’s Creek fan but back in 2012 while working for Citytv, I produced the promos for a short lived sitcom called “Don’t Trust The Bitch in Apartment 23”, in which James Van Der Beek played himself. I didn’t mind it but it only lasted a season. R.I.P. Mr. van Der Beek, gone way too young.

Maybe he had to fund some or most of his healthcare.

Not only has this fund raised over $2 million in just a few days, but reports now say director Steven Spielberg donated $25,000 to the cause. It pays to have wealthy friends in high places.

When it comes to why they had a GoFundMe page for a famous actor, this is very sad. But I suppose not surprising.
"Back in 2012, Van Der Beek revealed in an interview with Today that he was “paid almost nothing” for Dawson’s Creek during its five-year run. “There was no residual money,” he told Today. “I was 20. It was a bad contract. I saw almost nothing from that.”
