CTV and Global News End Of Year Credits And Pics Of Staff

I caught the CTV National News end of year credits and crew pictures that run usually Christmas eve and New Years day at the end of the national newscast.  Conveniently, the names were in groups of ten and in alphabetical order on CTV.
CTV National News (includes CTV News Channel)- 950 staff
Global National News- around 340

Not sure about Global, but CTV's did not include local news employees in the credit roll.  I have never noticed this on Global before (however in the past didn't watch Global news much) but CTV has been featuring the pics and credits for decades.

A question...Did PM Carney do an end of year interview with CTV News?  I saw him on with CBC and Global but nothing on CTV.  And never noticed that CTV promoted any end of year interview with the Prime Minister.  I thought I heard somewhere that he declined the 2025 recap with CTV.  Anybody else hear this??

Global's credits only featured staff who worked on Global National or work in the national newsrooms in Vancouver and Toronto, or are network news employees that are stationed across the country. Any staff that are normally on the local level that were in the credits had some kind of involvement with Global National over the last year.

CTV's credits were interesting.  As many of you know, Lane steinhauer's employment with CTV was terminated in the fall as one of the most recent "waves" of layoffs.   He worked in engineering- and had come over to CTV when they acquired the CHUM City properties.  He's a great guy.   He was listed in the credits last night.  I wonder how many others who were terminated by Bell in 2025 appeared in the credits?

That's a good point.  Although if they got a buyout or were paid for a certain number of weeks, they may still be considered staff for a time after being let go.

When I retired, even though I hadn't worked for months, I was still an employee since I was getting paid for my sick days. Paid every two weeks with all regular deductions and benefits in tact until the payment for sick days ran out. I didn't go for the lump payment which was also an option.

Re: CTV and Global News End Of Year Credits And Pics Of Staff

NBC Nightly News did its once-a-year credit roll on Christmas. It took more than seven minutes and was filled with both pics of the staffers and their names. The sheer volume of people who work there is incredible - hundreds and hundreds as they all went by.

It was amazing to see what each one did. In addition to the usual camera people, reporters, production types and editors, they had an international division, a social media division, a publicity division, an affiliate division, an intake division and possibly even a division dedicated to widgets - it went on so long I lost track.

It's nice for those who toil behind the scenes to get credit, even if it is only once a year. But I can see why they don't do it more than that. In a 23 minute or so newscast (minus the commercials) it takes up almost a quarter of the show just getting through all those names.

We used to run a "long credits" roll on my station at the end of every Friday show at 6 PM, time permitting. The people in the control room called it the "hey grandma, look for my name," because it went by so fast. Blink and you missed it! And yet I was constantly amazed by the number of people who would ask me, "was that your name I saw fly by on those credits Friday night?" So someone was watching it.

(And by the way, you wouldn't believe the trouble those credits caused me as the guy who once had to type them all out. Staffers were constantly asking me to change their name - "I want it to say "David" not "Dave," or "Put my middle initial in there," or "I've decided to hyphenate my surname," and on and on and on it went. As if anyone was really paying attention. Nonetheless, I did make all the changes they requested, regardless of how crazy the requests were.)

I knew Lane Steinhauer years ago. A great guy and a wonderful engineer who definitely deserved better. Not sure if he plans on retiring or finding another gig, but whoever ends up with him will be getting a real gem!

Global News Toronto ran a staff name credit on Christmas eve and New Year's eve. It was 2 minutes long and began like this.

CTV's ran for over 7 minutes and like I mentioned had many photos and graphics along with seasonal music.  I watched Global's as well and they also had photos of crew and staff who work on their national newscasts.   Global often had more casual shots of staff socializing together.  Regardless of their financial woes, they still had a surprising number of names for their national news.

I also worked with Lane years ago, great guy. I imagine that he may well retire since he’s around that age, and besides, as I discovered, there aren’t many broadcasters hiring anymore, especially for older, (and more experienced!) people.

It has been widely debunked, but if the 'Great Replacement' conspiracy theory was ever revealed to be true, at least this board would lose a few cement heads.  Draw your own conclusions. 🤨

Re: CTV and Global News End Of Year Credits And Pics Of Staff

I have always enjoyed the end credits, its unfortunate thats its only done once a year. Growing up it was done at the end of every local newscast.

And my guess is on a slow Newsday, 2 minutes or more of credits uses up a lot of time, and this can be put togather well in advance.
