A power failure took the Nashville New Year's celebration off the Eye Network on Dec. 31st, less than an hour into the show. When the signal went to black, you could almost see the powers that be panicking behind the scenes, airing a series of endless commercials, before rolling part of an old Kathy Bates episode of Matlock onto the screen.
After 12 minutes of chaos, they finally got the juice back and the show - as it must - went on.
But that wasn't the end of the oddity. When the special aired on the west coast, it was too late to fix the glitch, so viewers there saw the same dozen minute outage even though it was on tape by then.
What a way to ring in the New Year!

Speaking of weird things, those watching for the ball to drop at Times Square in New York Wednesday night on WKBW must have been disappointed. After all the hype and the big countdown, the solons at Channel 7 switched to the ball drop in Buffalo instead.
And after hours of build-up, viewers there were robbed of watching the Big Moment they tuned into see. It was an odd choice for someone at 'KB. I fully understand the desire to cover the event locally, but anyone watching had just seen almost three hours of hype about how incredible the expensive Ball Drop would be, all the fireworks going off, the thousands on site cheering, etc.
And then, it was all cut off for a less than exciting fireworks display from a local landmark. I get wanting the local angle, but maybe they could have at least done a split screen. Buffalo is a nice place, but it can't compete with Times Square on New Year's Eve!
Those watching the event on City TV's version of "Rockin' New Year's Eve" saw the whole thing from the Big Apple.

I back WKBW on this. If you really needed to see the Times Square ball drop, there were other options, including CNN, that you could switch over to, while only the Buffalo stations are in position to cover their own celebrations.
Kudos to WKBW for providing the resources to cover it, whereas most Canadian broadcasters, other than CBC, don't even make the effort.
