Alberta Online Radio Station Calls Itself "CFTR - The Rogue"

I wonder if Rogers knows or cares about this online radio station out of Alberta. It calls itself "CFTR- The Rogue" and offers a pretty full slate of music programming, along with advertising, news and more. Maybe it's just too small to go after them for using those assumed call letters, which they technically have no right to.

But it looks like they actually have a full staff of people doing shows there, as opposed to just being another automated music service. I counted at least 30 hosted shows on the Internet-only outlet.

Odd that they're allowed to get away with using those unofficial calls on their station. You can see their website here.

Re: Alberta Online Radio Station Calls Itself "CFTR - The Rogue"

The station appears to be based in the town of Chestermere, Alberta. I'm told since Internet stations don't actually have call letters, they're not really violating anything by calling themselves by that name.

So unless Rogers has specifically trademarked the name "CFTR," they may well not be doing anything wrong.

Here's how an AI I asked this question to explains it:

----------------

Why CFTR The Rogue can use the same letters

Because:

  • They are internet‑only, so call sign rules do not apply.
  • Rogers did not trademark “CFTR.”
  • Even if they had, trademark law requires likelihood of confusion, which is extremely unlikely between:

    • a Toronto all‑news AM station, and
    • a small community internet station in Chestermere, Alberta.

So they are not “getting away with” anything — they’re simply not violating any law or regulation.

Still seems odd, though.
