A Caught-On-Closed Captioning Moment From CTV's Toronto News

They say you should always assume your mic is hot as long as you're in front of it. It's good advice and yet it seems many people in broadcasting often forget it when they're on the air.

Which brings us to CTV Toronto's noon news on Wednesday. With Lyndsay Morrison off, they substituted with Jessica Smith. (Hey, I'm just glad they had an actual weather presenter, given their history.) She was promoing her upcoming forecast before the break, and went silent as the music played her out.

And then, just before the first commercial started, she began singing along playfully and quietly to the theme music. That's fine and a bit charming, but they hadn't killed her mic and it went out on air. But I was stunned to see that the closed captioning had picked up on this impromptu moment, which resulted in the odd CC you can see below.

Never realized there were words to the CTV news theme!

I recall hearing that the non-visible lines of the analog TV signal (where the captions reside) had sufficient space for other info.
