I would love to see a movie about the life of Neil Diamond someday. He's currently suffering from Parkinson's disease and is unlikely to ever perform again. But he's had an amazing career.
This Christmas, a new movie is coming out with Hugh Jackman performing all of the singer's famous tunes. The problem? He's not playing the iconic crooner. Instead, it's the story of a Neil Diamond impersonator. Which is not quite the same thing.
It's called Song Sung Blue and also stars Kate Hudson. It has all the classic hits, performed by Jackman - who doesn't do a bad job on mimicking the songs we all remember - but it's the story of the impersonator and not the singer.
Would you go see this?
Checking out the trailer below may help you answer that question. Meanwhile, the movie I'd really like to see has yet to be made.

My ex-wife was (still is) a big Neil Diamond fan so I we went to see him in concert at the old Copps Coliseum in 1998.
It was hard to admit at the time, but my classic and progressive rock loving self had a great time. He put on an excellent show, and I knew at least 80% of the songs, without ever having sought them out (shows how omnipresent his music was is my 1970/80s upbringing.

Wow! I was at that same concert! Small world!

Indeed!
It's the only concert I've ever been to that was "in the round". More shows should be like this.

This long awaited film opens on Thursday, Christmas Day.
Interesting to note that star Hugh Jackman went to Neil Diamond's home to let the singer choose the songs he performs in the movie. But there's still a film to be made one day about the actual singer himself, who also wrote some tunes for other performers before he hit it big, including The Monkees' classic "I'm A Believer."
Hugh Jackman made 'Song Sung Blue' as a 'love letter' to Neil Diamond

I saw Diamond's revolving stage concert in Vancouver on that tour. Never a big fan, but the Hot August Night tracksband earlier sixties radio hits were fun to hear again. His audience that night was literally from eight to eighty, and 20k voices were singing along from note one.
