Ben Mulroney's Radio Stunt Wasn't Exactly Magic

I guess this worked on his YouTube video feed, but if you were listening on AM640 Monday, you were scratching your head. Ben Mulroney had a magician on for one segment of his show and he was doing a card trick on the radio.

Yes, a card trick. On the radio.

Let that sink in for a moment. If there's one thing that doesn't work on an audio-only medium, a card trick might be top of the list.

What's next? Tap dancing?

I normally like the show, but this was just insane.

His old man liked feats of legerdemain, too, as I recall. 🤨

On tomorrow's radio show: "how many fingers am I holding up?"

Other radio segments that I’ve heard from other broadcasters (including CBC Radio One) that should be saved for a visual medium:

- Food and wine reviewers
- Halloween costume reveals
- Segment on a piece of artwork/clothing that we clearly can’t see on the radio

Brian Mulroney also enjoyed "throwing the dice."

Didn't Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy used to do ventriloquism on the radio?

Baseball is ok on radio when the game is kind of lazy and the commentators have time to talk about "stuff."  Where radio fails IMO is when something exciting happens like homeruns, disputed calls with replays, fumbled catches, and general atmosphere of the stadium.  Can't imagine the Jays post season games as being nearly as exciting if you were just listening to radio.  It wouldn't have come close to doing those games justice.

I don't think Charlie McCarthy did much of anything, tbh.

Jiggers!!  His exchanges with Mr. Fields were the priceless. 😉
