Attn. AM640: One At A Time!

I was listening to an AM640 segment called "Ask Me Anything," in which morning personality Greg Brady presents listener questions to fellow hosts Ben Mulroney and Alex Pierson. I actually like the idea, because they're all radio pros with different experiences.

But honestly, it doesn't help much if you can't hear what they're saying. These three voluble folks never run out of things to say but it's impossible to listen to since they constantly talk over each other. It's almost like a contest of wills, and who can get the next word in edgewise.

So a new rule should be imposed for next week - "One At A Time!" No one can hear anything if you keep blabbing over each other. Otherwise you might as well change the name from "Ask Me Anything" to "Tell Me Nothing." Because you can't hear the answers amongst the endless babble.

Pierson has always had a terrible habit of talking over anyone in any kind of cross-over or debating situation.  Brady and Mulroney also appear to love the sound of their own voices over any others.  It adds up to bad radio.

I respectfully disagree with Walter. You are dealing with three intelligent, opinionated, passionate radio professionals. Sure, they may not operate under the same rules as a model United Nations, but I love the ad-lib element of the segment. You never know what is going to be said - even in anger where inhibitions tend to vanish - and it was funny at times. I agree there is a tendency to hear voice over voice, but would you not prefer that, in a stimulating discussion, than scripted boredom?

I don't entirely disagree with you, I like the segment. But if all you hear are three voices all talking at once over and over and over, as was the case in the early going on Friday, you wind up tuning it out. It's no good if you can't hear what they're saying!

Re: Attn. AM640: One At A Time!

I believe they also did one last week and possibly a few weeks before. I don't always get the chance to listen at that time. It seems to be a Friday at 7:36 AM feature and goes commercial free until the 8 AM news.

The station is phasing out "Think Tank" and trying some new ideas.

Yes I noticed that. I guess it was too much like CFRB's "Roundtable," which starts about 7 minutes later and is a bit more established.

All these segments depend entirely on who the guests are. Good ones with well expressed opinions make the segment. Others who are not so entertaining can make for a long 15-30 minutes.

If 640 wants to phase anything out, please make it Brady's regular segment with retired 'crime expert' Hank Idsingaa .  The man has nothing to say, regardless of topic, other than it's tragic for the victims, and the men and women in blue are doing a great job.  Nothing, not even Spence ads, make me change stations as fast as that snooze-fest.

Re: Attn. AM640: One At A Time!

Walter - it's too early for you to be this angry with 640. If you are going to have an "information station," you need experts, and in the case of the police, you need the police! Hank and Clayton, if nothing else, tell you what happens on the ground level of crime investigation. They cannot give away information to jeopardize a case so you aren't going to get the information you would like. However, they are no different than when Greg invites on teachers, doctors, dentists, lawyers, professors, mortgage specialists - they give you a bird's eye view of the issues. However, none of them jeopardize their careers with information - or turn on their employer.

Respectfully, that is the problem.  What good is an 'information station', when the 'expert' guest gives zero information?  It's a waste of time, and boring.  I'll continue to change channels every time Hank's near the microphone.

Re: Attn. AM640: One At A Time!

Walter - nothing you said is disrespectful at all. No worries. I like your comments, and they cause me to think. I agree with you that, at times, Hank suffers from trying to say as little as possible. I guess I give him the benefit of the doubt because (i) I have never been in law enforcement and (ii) given what I just said in (i), I assume, even retired, he can only say so much without threatening a case or the ability of his former colleagues to do their jobs. That is my only guess.

In other words, they have the right to remain silent...

Agreed.  Cops, retired or not, can't jeopardize a live case by divulging sensitive info.  Still, I have to wonder why bother have them on at all, if they can't shed much light on the subject?  I guess it's still better than another Frank Leo promo!  Have a good weekend!

Re: Attn. AM640: One At A Time!

To be honest, Idsinga isn't the leader when it comes to automatic channel-changing from 640.  That dubious distinction goes to Tony Chapman, who Ben Mulroney insists is some kind of guru, and inflicts on listeners on a regular basis.

Re: Attn. AM640: One At A Time!

I had a couple of friends who senior employees at Chapman's advertising agency. They had nothing positive to say about him. I'm not sure why radio stations like 640/1010 want to know his opinion on anything. Personally, if he pops up on a station I'm listening to, I pop out.

Re: Attn. AM640: One At A Time!

I just listened to this Friday's "Ask Me Anything" segment on AM640, where Alex Pierson and Ben Mulroney answer listener questions, with morning show host Greg Brady chiming in, as well.

For the second week in a row, they talked all over each other and you could barely make out who was saying what at various times.

I get they're dealing with big egos (and big mouths) but to repeat - spontaneity is fine, but if we can't hear you, the segment is useless! I really like the idea behind it, but it's radio and has to be audible!

I caught that, as well.  After about 2 minutes, I couldn't stand it and switched it off.  It's just garbled yelling, with no value whatsoever.  Hopefully, whoever produces that racket gets some constructive feedback, and puts things right. If the three combating egos can't shut up for a second or two, please end the segment.
