We Know Who’s Replacing John Oakley – For Now

The long goodbye for John Oakley is finally finished and the question now is: who takes over on Monday? The answer can be found in a promo running on the station all weekend, but it doesn’t completely solve the entire mystery.

It’s regular sub Brad Smith, who in the spot says he’ll be working the 3-6 shift “for the holiday period.” I take that to mean he’s not permanent and Corus brass is just vamping until January, when a new regular host will be revealed.

No one is confirmed yet as to who that might be, but best bets seem to be on Ben Mulroney. We’ll know in about a month.

Brad Smith is pretty lightweight.  Maybe some day, he'll stop repeatedly referencing 'The Bachelor', riding the pines in the CFL, and his Senator father.  Hopefully, it'll only be for a few weeks, and then he returns to the back-up squad.

He can keep The Bachelor, CFL, Senator father references if he would just stop repeatedly referencing conspiracy theories from the Internet.

Also talking about the fact he has ADHD, but then that's probably why he keeps talking about it.

Re: We Know Who’s Replacing John Oakley – For Now

Some tough opinions on Smith above, and I'm not suggesting he's a seasoned radio broadcaster, but I've been decently impressed at his evolution over the months - less nerves and slowing down on-air, more host-type presence, and injecting more of his natural personality. There have been worse holiday season fill-in or coverage hosts before formal line-up changes take effect on 640 or 1010, for that matter, before. He's also been extraordinary honest about his own journey - he mentioned on Friday's show, for example, coming from "Breakfast Television" segments and other TV, "everything was done for you" - segments researched, produced, wardrobe/camera makeup, etc. - and with radio he had no idea how difficult it was in comparison and how much prep and sheer talking he had to do to fill the slots.

To me, he's being honest with the listener about his growth in that medium and that goes a long way for me as a listener rather than false bravado or cockiness.
