Ottawa College Radio Station "Saved His Life" As CKCU-FM Hits 50

His name is Andrew Caddell and he's a grad from Carleton University, which he attended primarily because it had its own radio station - CKCU-FM. It was only a campus outlet when it started but later got a licence from the CRTC, and it launched him on a career he otherwise never dreamed of.

And he credits that experience with giving him a new lease on life, when he was down on his luck and looking for a way out.

"When I see the homeless on our streets, I think, “there but for fortune go I.” I doubt I would have succeeded anywhere without the support of my colleagues at Radio Carleton. That small community was an island of sanity for me, and I tell Carleton students looking for a challenge to go to CKCU and see if that’s where they belong."

The station is celebrating 50 years on air this week, and it claims a number of successful alumni - including the current mayor of Ottawa.
