Is An Early Nov. Snowstorm Enough To Get CTV To Do Real Wknd. Weather?

My suspicion is probably not. This isn't a serious enough dumping (although it may be worse in areas like Newmarket and beyond) to have them bring in someone to do a proper weather forecast. But on a day when it's been the lead story on all the radio newscasts for 24 hours, you have to wonder what it would take to reverse that decision. (Their 6 o'clock show is only on CP24, because CFTO is airing the NFL in that timeslot, so to me, that makes it even less likely.)

I recall last year when they had Lindsay Morrison live somewhere (I'm guessing it was just outside of her home in a rather generic spot) doing a storm update on a day when she doesn't usually work, but I haven't seen that since.

The first real snowfall of the year is almost always a big story in Toronto, because of all the accidents that happen when people without snow tires or who forget how to drive in these conditions venture out on the roads. It's been that way every single year as far back as I can remember. Luckily, this one is on a Sunday, so no rush hour home and the flakes are not really sticking on the streets.

But later on in the season, it will happen again. Is there anything outside of Snowmaggedon that will force CTV Toronto to actually do a proper weekend weather forecast, without their two anchors laughing it off and ad libbing it, clearly without any idea what they're talking about? I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Well, kudos to CTV. They actually brought Lindsay Morrison in on her day off to do the weather. I've been critical of them in the past, but they did the right thing on Sunday. Every Toronto newscast led with the snowstorm.

Considering this is one of your favourite recurring topics, I'm surprised you still can't spell Lyndsay's name properly.

How sad.  We are actually excited that CFTO brings in someone to do the weather on a Sunday evening.  Hope this doesn't bankrupt Bell Media...

I believe that CTV anticipated that they would need Lyndsay for Sunday and that's why they gave her the day off on Friday (Jessica Smith filled in on that day to do weather) so it does show that they wanted to have someone other than Andria or Rahim try to badly read the weather report off their malfunctioning teleprompter.

Actually, I wondered about that, too, as to why Smith was in for Morrison, instead of the former being at some completely unnecessary art show. It makes sense, I suppose, but if there are a lot of weekend storms coming they can't do this forever. Better to have a dedicated person for it. Both Global and City do and they make no claims about being Toronto's #1 newscast on a regular basis.

You can mostly get away with this in the summer but a Toronto winter is an entirely different animal.

How bad was it in Toronto? Here in London we got away with just a light dusting.

Re: Is An Early Nov. Snowstorm Enough To Get CTV To Do Real Wknd. Weather?

It wasn't overwhelming like some of last year's endless snowfalls, but there was more than enough to shovel where I am near the northern part of North York. And because it's the heavier wet kind, it was harder to move. I cleaned my driveway at around 8 PM, only to look out the window an hour or so later and saw it had all come back again.

So not the worst we could get, but the first big dump, especially coming so early and after such a warm late October, was especially unwelcome.

London is forecast to get up to 30cm on Monday. My snowblower is away being serviced.

Not a flake up in the Greater Sudbury Area. Although the temperature when I head off to work in an hour is only -10, -16 windchill.

Re: Is An Early Nov. Snowstorm Enough To Get CTV To Do Real Wknd. Weather?

Well, that explains the Sunday appearance. Lyndsay Morrison was off on Tuesday's CTV News At 6, although she appeared on the noon show.

Did they give her half the day off in lieu or was it something else? (Better she do the 6 than the noon.)

Either way, it was staff weather on Tuesday's evening show and given the recent record setting snowfall for the past few days, it wasn't very informative.

Anthony Farnell, here I come...

Actually I think she didn't do the 6pm newscast because she wasn't feeling well. I distinctly heard her having a bit of trouble speaking at noon, her voice sounded a bit raw so it's possible she may be coming down with something and they let her go home and get some rest (it is flu season after all)
