It's a first for me - hearing a radio station run an ad for one of their own in the chain. And so it was on an early Tuesday morning that AM640 ran an ad/promo praising "102.1" as one of the pioneering radio stations in the country.
They called it "The Edge" (with no reference to the call letters or the "Spirit of Radio" that made the place famous) reminding listeners it was the outlet that first brought them alternative forms of music.
In all the years I was a fan of CHUM-AM, I don't think I ever heard them refer to their FM counterpart. CFRB only refers to Virgin 99,9 when introducing Marilyn Denis' regular segment with John Moore once a week. And you rarely hear 680 News reference CHFI.
This was an actual 30 sec. pre-produced spot. Is a major rating period underway? And will they also do one for Q107? An interesting trend, if it does become one.

Back when I worked in television, there was a lot of cross-promotion between our various channels. For example, a live concert being aired on MuchMusic would be promoted on Citytv, or a FT special would be promoted on MuchMoreMusic and Bravo. A fairly cost effective way to promote and sometimes the promo would be tailored to fit in on those alternate channels. I’m actually surprised that there isn’t more of this in radio.

I have heard spots on CFTR for some of their online offerings, like Rocket Radio, one of the choices on CHFI's HD channels. And they all reference their various apps, like Rogers' Seekr or Bell's iHeart radio offerings. 680 will occasionally mention one of their other Toronto stations if they intend to play a clip from an interview from say, Kiss 92.5.
But a full spot for an actual other radio station in the market? That's a new one on me.

I haven't heard any recently since I don't listen to them much but 680 News would cross promote with CHFI. Same here in Kitchener with 570 News and CHYM/106.7 Country have been cross promoting for years. Not heavy but the promos play from time to time.

I'm curious - are they just casual mentions as in "Taylor Swift was interviewed by our morning team on CHFI and here's a clip" or is it an actual studio produced spot? It's one thing to be a casual reference or credit a source on air and quite another to be a paid-like "go listen to them" commercial. Which ones did you hear?
In my experience, most stations don't want you to "touch that dial," even for one of their other properties.

Just heard them air an Alan Cross-voiced Q107 spot during a break on the Ben Mulroney Show.
What's next? A spot promoting AM640 on CFNY or Q?
It will be interesting to see how long this lasts.

680 is the perfect station to run cross-promos on.
Tons of listeners without the expectation of "not touching the dial." There will be plenty of CHFI promos there starting Friday.

Shouldn't they be mentioning CHUM 104.5?

They are produced promos. Something like "You know that 570 Newsradio gives you up to date news, sports, traffic and weather. But when you want to listen to music..." 570 also promotes their country station 106.7 with a separate promo. I have heard announcers on CHYM 96.7 promote a Kitchener Rangers game and remind listeners that you can catch the game live on the home of the Rangers, 570 Newsradio at 7pm or whenever the game is. I believe they also have a produced promo for 570 but I don't listen to CHYM very much.
The Rangers usually sell out every game, so not a concern for the team to promo the radio broadcasts. Same in Guelph with Magic 106.1 promoting the Guelph Storm broadcasts on 1460 CJOY.

OK, so it's mostly a liner. It's like when 680 tells you you can find the Leaf or Jays game airing right now on the Fan590 during a sports update. A friendly reminder, but not a full 30 secs. devoted to one station. That's what I thought. This is different, in that it take up a full 30 secs. of ad time and is pre-produced.

No, like the first line in my post says, they are produced promos. The only liner would be for the hockey game. 570 has produced promos for CHYM FM and others for Country 106.7 promoting their music. Wouldn't be surprised if CJOY does the same for Magic when they flip soon to all Christmas.
