Vintage Video: This Was Alex Trebek's First Ever TV Hosting Job

When I first saw this story on a U.S. site, I was convinced they might have chosen a dumb and now fairly obscure NBC game show called "The Wizard of Odds," that marked the host's first real American TV gig.

But I was happy to see they'd actually included Canada and even a short video of Trebek on a CBC teen music program called "Music Hop." It first aired on the Corp. in October 1963 and featured a very young version of the Jeopardy host long before he'd grown his famous facial hair.

(But what's with the Benny Hill-like intro music?)

Notice Red Shea and John Stockfish?  They played for many years with Gordon Lightfoot.

The song is "Yakety Sax", which was a moderate hit single for Boots Randolph in 1963, the same year this show came out.

Yes, that's it! I knew it sounded familiar but I just couldn't place it. Makes sense now, although I still expected Benny to come out and chase someone around the set!
