Rogers FMs May No Longer Have Homes In Kingston, Timmins & The Sault

Between now and the new year, Rogers is giving up its physical station territory in selected smaller cities across the country for remote only broadcasting. No one is getting fired, it appears, just relocating, while continuing to broadcast to the communities they were licensed to serve.

The stations involved in the transition include some in Alberta, along with several in Timmins, Sault Ste. Marie and Kingston. It's not yet clear what happens to the properties those stations are broadcasting in, but if they're giving up their current headquarters, the plan will almost certainly save Rogers a lot of money in maintenance, taxes and other fees.

According to Broadcast Dialogue:

"A Rogers Sports & Media spokesperson... [says] it will be business as usual in terms of the on-air product, with talent broadcasting remotely from the same local market. The spokesperson said there are no employee impacts, with sales teams also continuing to work remotely with local advertisers and partners."

I read that as no longer having a base station or building to go to.

I can see why they might do this, but it really annoys me. There's something to be said for having your people on scene in a physical place that connects them to the community, whether it be a local event, parade or weather emergency - and each other. That will disappear into a "remoteness" that I believe may not have the same feel to it. There's also something to be said for having your on-air colleagues together in the same space, even if only briefly every day.

But that, it seems is the new nature of radio and if there's a penny to be saved, you can be sure Rogers will find it.

Rogers Sports & Media moves to remote ops model for smaller market radio stations

Re: Rogers FMs May No Longer Have Homes In Kingston, Timmins & The Sault

Just as an aside, when I was about 6 years old, my mother took me to CHUM at 1331 Yonge St. for a tour on my birthday. I was a radio crazed kid even then and I remember seeing Bob McAdorey behind the mic from the control room, with the ops cueing up the next record. He gave me a wave from inside the booth, and I was thrilled.

It's something I still recall all these years later. And while I doubt any kid today would consider that a good birthday gift, it's one of my best childhood memories - just to see how things worked behind the scenes at my then-favourite radio station.

With the Rogers move, that wouldn't be possible anymore. It makes me kind of sad, because there was always something special about a physical place that housed a radio station.

Well to be fair in most of the affected markets, their are only 2 on air staff locally. The rest come from out of market. I think the Sault has only one local host from what I heard. So it doesn't make sense to me to pay for a studio space for one or two hosts.

You're probably right and maybe I'm being foolish - but I remember all the time my family would drive downtown when I was a kid and passing by the buildings that housed both CFRB and CHUM at Yonge and St. Clair. And farther down, the CKFH sign.

I loved seeing those places and often wondered what was going on behind those doors. So forgive my nostalgia, but those locations sparked my imagination and further love of the medium.

It wouldn't have been the same if they weren't there. Which, ironically, they no longer are.

The move makes sense. I don't have to like it, though.

My son attended Canadore college in North Bay, enrolled in the radio course, which he completed in 2015. Part of his studies included doing time at the Rogers FM rock station there. He became and still is, friends with the fellow who at that time was the afternoon drive personality. I had the opportunity to spend an afternoon there as a guest, and clearly remember the guy telling me he was also being broadcast on the Timmins Rogers station, in fact, did live cut ins as the show progressed between the two. So, this news regarding the station in Timmins has been taking place for a decade already. At least as far as afternoon drive is concerned.

Interestingly, the Kingston rock station already syndicates its morning show to the Northern Ontario stations. It's a two person show.

Easy enough to tell someone they have to host a solo show from home, but a duo is another matter. Sure, they could technically do it separately from their own homes, but that would be a nightmare.

I guess we'll find out that they mean by "...or alternate locations"

Brock and Dalby. They are on Q92 in Sudbury and the Rogers outlet in North Bay that I know of for sure.

The 'airwaves' are supposed to be public property. Stations that are granted a licence are supposed to serve their community. That should include a local studio; even a modest one.

You can serve a community without a studio. If anything the onus should be having some local staff, even if they work from home
