I'm not much into automobiles, but I like what I read in this story about a car that does not have a fancy-schmancy screen in or near the dashboard, instead of the constantly spreading multi-coloured screens that are now seemingly de rigeur in most models.
"The crossover comes with a basic radio, a microphone for voice commands and calls, and two front speakers that only function when a phone is connected via Bluetooth. A USB Type-C port offers quick charging on the move, while the manual air-conditioning system keeps things old-school with rotary dials on the center console. "
I know it sounds old fashioned, but I've started to hate the screen in my still relatively (2 years) new car, and the radio in it boasts maybe the worst integrated screen for tuning I've ever seen. I also hate having to look away from the street to adjust things like the heater or other functions. Who thought that was a good idea?
So bring it on! I wish this was around when I was shopping for my new vehicle! I'm not old fashioned, but when it comes to screen distractions while driving, I've definitely become old school.

When I was shopping for a new vehicle last year, I found that many of today's vehicles don't offer SXM. They say it isn't needed, you can just plug in the SXM ap on your phone.
I finally bought a quaint, old fashioned Mitsubishi that still provides SXM service in this century..

I thought you didn't listen to streaming?

I don't have a phone to do streaming. That's why I bought the Mitsubishi. Now I only have the monthly bill for SXM to pay. I don't have a mobile phone plan on to pay on top of that.

I'll have respect for the concept when they bring back the pull-to-preset chonkbuttons.

But you are streaming.

Of course, it isn't broadcast radio but whan you live in a radio wasteland like London, SXM is the only game in town and I don't have to buy an extra piece of hardware to listen.

You have to buy a radio that's equipped for it.
SXM is broadcast radio, it is also streaming.
Listening to an internet radio station is streaming, and it's also broadcast radio.

No. I shopped around for a vehicle in which SXM was included. The only cost for me is the monthly subscription. If I used that ap business I would also have to pay for mobile phone plan.

Different forms of streaming have different costs.
You could have also picked a vehicle at the same cost that had other forms of streaming that don't require the extra cost of a SXM subscription.

Then I would have to buy a cell phone plus a monthly plan. That would end up costing me more than the SXM.

This has gone a long way from "streaming isn't radio", which you've often asserted.

It was simply a recounting of my experience of shopping for a new vehicle in an age when the automobile industry is going minimalist for their on-board entertainment systems.
When there is no alternative to AM or FM, then SXM will have to do.
Natural daylight is superior to artificial, electric lighting. But when you live in a house with no windows, you have to settle.

Just yesterday I heard a piece on this, I think it was on Shane Hewitt’s show. They were discussing the in dash screens and how you have to go through sub-menus to do basic functions like AC etc. and how distracting that is to the driver. The guest suggested hanging on to your older model car for as long as possible for this and a few other reasons, mostly pricing. When I drive my wife’s car, the huge screen drives me nuts and I usually leave the radio on the whatever station it is tuned to, it takes a while to change! I prefer my old school Civic any day!

Rustproofing. Mazdas need rustproofing. Aside from that they're tanks.
