The Strange Saga Of The Ottawa Sens. Game Radio Fans Never Got To Hear

This is a very odd little story that affected those in the Nation’s Capital on Sunday. It involved TSN 1200 and the reasons fans could only hear the pre-season game of the Ottawa Senators in French.

It was played in Quebec City, and a lot had to go wrong to prevent the game from being on radio and apparently, a lot did. It just hasn’t entirely been explained. It seems to have something to do with mysterious and still unexplained technical difficulties, the rivalry between Bell Media and Quebecor and the fact the play-by-play announcers don’t travel with the team, presumably to save money.

It’s a pretty convoluted little media tale I can’t recall ever hearing before. You can read the details here:

Corporate incompetence again!!!  I was wondering why it wasn't on.  Now, the Sens and Bell can buy new shoes and start dancing.

Management has attempted to explain what happened, but it's pretty convoluted.

In the meantime, those in Ottawa may have also experienced this, but it's simply unbelievable - some can't get Ottawa Senators games because the provider doesn't think they're really in Ottawa! It all has to do with a glitch in the IP address when those in the capital region sit down to watch a game.

"Some Ottawa residents are being mistakenly identified as living elsewhere in Ontario.

"Your internet cable provider thinks you’re trying to watch a TSN 5 game from out-of-market, even though you live within a stone’s throw of Canadian Tire Centre," [The Sens.' Ian] Mendes wrote. "If you try and stream the game on your phone – using regular data – you’ll be fine because it will register that your device is in Ottawa. But try watching the game off Wi-Fi on that same phone and boom, you’re back to the same problem. It might think you’re in Kitchener."

What a ridiculous mess! As the old Ace song went, "How long has this been going on?"

Interesting that he does not disclose which "cable provider" was having the issue. Blackouts are handled by each BDU, so it's possible it was Rogers and he didn't want to expose their big sponsor

He’s talking about people having trouble streaming a game. He erroneously used the term “internet cable provider”.
