Bobby Hart Of Boyce & Hart & Monkees Hit Composer Dies At 86

You may remember his two chart hits, along with the late Tommy Boyce - "I Wonder What /She's Doing Tonight" & "Alice Long." But Bobby Hart and his writing and producing partner were perhaps best known for a song they wrote but never sang - the Theme From The Monkees.

During the short run of the series in the 60s, the tune was heard not only at the beginning of the TV show every week, but also on the radio, where it became a big hit.

“Boyce began strumming his guitar and I joined in by snapping my fingers & making noises with my mouth that simulated an open & closed hi-hat cymbal,” Hart wrote in his memoir. “We had created the perfect recipe for inspiration and started singing about just what we were doing: ‘Walkin’ down the street.’”

They were also behind my favourite Pre-Fab Four classic, "Last Train To Clarksville," which soared to #1 when the show debuted in 1966.

Other songs on their long list of greats: The Monkees' "Valleri" and Jay & The Americans great "Come A Little Bit Closer."

And here's a great bit of trivia I never knew - they also wrote the theme for the soap opera "Days of our Lives."

Hart was 86.
