CKLW has a story on the format flip, along with comments from the P.D., who claims 'a lot of people were asking for this.'
And what was with all those Spanish language inserts?
"Gibb says the first and last song played on 89X was Stop! by Jane's Addiction - which was a major Easter egg for the station's return.
"We knew that that song needed to be the song that started this version of 89X, and the interesting thing with that song is that it does start with 20 seconds of a Spanish woman talking. So we decided to put the audio cues out in Spanish, and if you translated it you could figure out what was going on."
And by the way, they have openings for morning and drivetime announcers, if you're looking.
Windsor's Pure Country rebrands back to the beloved 89X

Looks like their final country songs were Johnny Cash rock covers like Hurt, Personal Jesus, Rusty Cage. That's pretty interesting. The station's slogans are focusing on Windsor, even though most of their listeners will be from Michigan. Just like the previous switch to country, Detroit media is making a much bigger deal about this than Windsor.

I lived in Michigan in the 60s and 70s
I remember when 88.7 made its debut as CKWW FM, playing "beautiful" music.....later on it was CJOM
When it became 89X, it was quite popular in Detroit...I wish them well...there are, indeed, plenty of country stations available in southwestern Ontario......including the AM holdouts of CFCO and CHOK.
(I know CFCO is going to switch to 91.3)
I also remember when 92.7 in Leamington went on the air...it did not do well, and now simulcasts the Blackburn Windsor country station.
One other note....I heard Jody Thornton doing a traffic report on CKTB...is he working regularly again? I hope so...
He has a great radio voice. (And I am very glad Karl Dockstader is still on CKTB.)

Wow. Everything old is new again. My first full-time engineering gig was at 89X (actually CHUM Group Windsor which also included CKLW, CKWW, and The River) back in the 90's. It was neat to work there. It was the heyday of 89X and the music was right in my wheelhouse. Between the four stations, the staff numbered around 50, and about half were American (most of whom commuted daily from Detroit). Famous musicians and bands occasionally stopped in for live performances. Good times.

Hey? I remember 5 years ago saying that Country won't last long on Windsor's 89FM.
I didn't actually predict the return of 89X though.
All I recall saying is "They'll probably be Country for a little while then switch to something new..."
Do you think that Virgin Radio Windsor will last long?
That depends on what cookie cutters are out there to be the possible replacement.
If they do change, I doubt it'll be something fresh and new.
With Virgin Beating Mix 96.7, there may be something there, assuming the current audience isn't too young.

Nice of them to acknowledge the big 8! Hopefully some local talent will move in.... there's no appetite for US syndicated shows like their former programming

Seems to be leaning heavier than most other alternative stations, but from what I recall 89X was always a little heavier.

CTV News Windsor covered the return on their nightly newscast.
It’s back! 89X returns to Windsor-Essex airwaves

Most local Detroit TV stations had the story on their newscasts, as did the Detroit Free Press. I guess back in the 90's and early 2000's 89X was a influencer in Michigan. One poster on one of the Detroit radio boards mentioned at it's peak 89X had a 6 share in Detroit. Years ago the station was included in Detroit radio ratings.

People still listen to music on radio?
Neat
89x was good during my 4 years living in Windsor (99-02)
I do also miss that local Detroit radio talk though.

As of yesterday 89X is running commercials. They still have an advantage over other local stations (maybe other than 580 CKWW) in that they have short commercial breaks. Usually 1 or two minutes. A big difference than WRIF which can have commercial/promo sets of 7-10 minutes. But WRIF is making money and for now 89X won't be. Does CKWW or CKOC have any ads?

CKWW has some ads. Some of them are American (eg. lawyers) The station mentions that it serves Windsor and Detroit. I know they have newscasts at 7 and 8 am. Their morning show now only has one host: Mark Lander. I don't know what happened to Kara Ro.
I wish them success.

A comment on the Michigan Radio & TV Buzzboard indicates that Kara Ro was cut for budgetary reasons.

Can't speak to AM580, but I can finally answer the latter question. I briefly tuned into CKOC on Saturday and actually heard two commercials back to back. The first was for a local real estate agent and the second was for a funeral home. Not sure what that last one says about 1150's perceived audience demo but at least they were paid ads.
I don't tune them in often, but it was the first time I've heard any spots on the station since Neeti Ray took over the place. There may have been others, but I wasn't listening if they aired.
