The Unknown, Inexperienced TV Host Who Talked Her Way Onto Global

Remember the name Faye Dance? She became famous - if you can call it that - by hosting the first lottery TV drawings on Global back in the 70s with Fred Davis.

Dance had just graduated from Ryerson and no one had ever heard of her. And she had no real media experience. So how did she land the gig that would make her a well known name? With a lot of chutzpah.

“Global Television was brand new. And I thought, ‘Well, I’m brand new.’ And I took the initiative,” she recalled. “I cold-called the president, Allan Slaight, of Global, and I talked to his secretary and I said, ‘I can come Tuesday or Thursday at 11 a.m. to tour your facilities. What is the best?’ And she stammered a minute and she said, ‘Well, I guess Tuesday.’ Everybody thought I was a somebody and I was an absolute nobody.”
