4 Words You Wouldn't Think Go Together - American Bandstand/Pink Floyd

The last place you'd ever expect to see a group like Pink Floyd is on a mainstream show like the old American Bandstand. But there they were in 1967, being introduced by the world's oldest teenager, Dick Clark.

Have to admit I've never heard of the song they performed that day (in the video below, which was colourized to varying degrees of success by a poster who goes by the moniker Artist on the Border.)

It's almost surreal to see it all these years later, knowing who Pink Floyd would become. They're not looking all that happy to be there. Not sure I'd believe it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes.

Oddly hypnotic colourized footage of Pink Floyd miming on ‘American Bandstand’ in 1967

"The Pink Floyd?"
It looks like they deliberately chose an awful song hoping to piss their audience off.
Looks like they did it by that tepid smattering of applause.
And yes they all looked very unhappy to be there.
Presumably their handlers made them do it.
So they practiced what the army calls "malicious compliance"

Yes, they were known as "The Pink Floyd" at one time (among many other names before dropping the "The"). They also had a very psychedelic-pop-oriented beginning. They didn't get into the space rock they're known for until founding member Syd Barrett was replaced by guitar virtuoso David Gilmour. Appearing on AB is/was no different than appearing on Top of the Pops...managers and labels wanted their bands on those shows for exposure.

"Apples and Oranges" was their third official (read: UK) single. To paraphrase founding member Roger Waters: "great song, terrible production". They weren't really happy to be there as Syd was already beginning his mental decline. "Have You Got It Yet?" is an excellent documentary exploring the Syd situation.

I still don't get the need for colourising old footage - I don't think I've ever encountered a colourised piece that looked better than the original.

Yeah, colorization really sucks.
I am always appalled when some company colorizes a classic movie or TV show.
Casablanca in colorization??!!
No bloody way.
And another thing.
Remember when some American  network showed hockey games where they computer imaged a red or blue streak whenever a player shot the puck?
Thank heavens that failed miserably.

I'm probably in the minority here but the Syd era is my favorite for Pink Floyd. Most of their songs from this era including Apples and Oranges are highly revered by Syd fans.

This song was the first I heard by them and is still my personal favorite. I think this was played on CHUM but may not have charted.

We used to say... "Colourization...  pictures a blind man would be happy to see!"

And the US Network was Fox with the "Fox Puck"

Here is a black and white clip of the same AB lip sync with a short interview segment.. Believe it or not they also appeared on the Pat Boone show but video of that has not turned up. Was shortly after this they went back to the UK and Syd completely unraveled. Dave Gilmour first came in with Barrett still there but after 5 UK shows they dropped any pretense that he could still function.
