Why did an AM outlet in Birmingham, Alabama make the decision to suddenly turn off its AM digital-only signal? The station's chief engineer tries to explain the decision, but it comes down to this - there simply weren't enough people able to receive the signal properly to keep it going.
Why this came as a surprise to this company is anyone's guess but his insights are interesting nonetheless. And they haven't ruled out turning the thing back on.

They didn't drop digital completely to be clear.. they just rolled back to Hybrid format, which allows analog and digital at the same time. They are in a smaller market and I'm only guessing here... due to their programming change, they needed to ensure they hit the most people possible it make it work. Only draw back with Hybrid format HD is more affected by noise like storms, electrical, etc. which will cause digital to drop out more often. Digital only will work only after every car has HD as an option... but today with so many older vehicles on the road, we just are not there yet. Most newer cars have HD... so it's only a matter of time.. but that time is not today.
