Sauga960 Makes A Surprising Claim About Its Listenership

If you read the thread about nothing being on the radio Saturday mornings, you might understand how I ended up on Sauga960 for a few minutes. And that's where Greg Carrasco was making some pretty astonishing claims.

He insisted his show was the #1 "automotive-themed" program in all of Canada. (I suppose that could be true, especially if there aren't any others anywhere in the country!)

But then he quoted management as telling him his show had an audience of at least 80,000 people and it was growing. Look, any other radio station getting just 80,000 listeners would be considered a disaster, but I suppose for a small low powered outlet in Mississauga, they think it's pretty good.

Given the content on his show - which I've occasionally monitored before - I find it hard to believe. (He did add it was a cumulative number for both of the shows, which airs Saturday and reruns on Sunday.) Are they even clients of Numeris? How would they know the numbers?

The show is basically a shilling device for his Nissan dealership in Oakville. I'm highly skeptical that a show no one's ever heard of that broadcasts on a station few people listen to would attract that many ears on a weekend morning. But I suppose anything is possible.

Sautrday & Sunday combined, 8am-11am, Average weekly audience:

CFRB: 85,000
FAN:   45,000
640:    20,000
TSN: 5,000

So....no.

'Figures lie, and liars figure'.

That old saw has served me well over the years.

I wonder if they used a private firm to make that claim ? Carrasco hasn't struck me as a guy who would just make something of that magnitude up.

He says it was one of the station brass who told him. So he wasn't making it up. (Although perhaps she was!)

Yes, there are other firms, but they tend to find the answers the client is looking for.

The ridiculous ratings claims seem to be a common theme amongst hosts at 960, so it's probably originating from management.

Looks like the ratings are indeed the truth, but they're not all Mississauga listeners. It's a listener base from all over the place, perhaps in places that shouldn't really be counted, as they are so far away and would most likely buy a car closer to their own neck of the woods, not in the area this program represents.

Agreed.  Case in point, J.D. Power Agency.  Years ago I was advised that agency will always find some category that your product or service will rank highly in, providing you have contracted with them.  When I see or hear 'J.D. Power' I automatically think 'bought endorsement'.

That's what I think sur sagar does.
Sauga has turned mostly into a brokered far-right talk radio station who's shows have nothing to do with Missisauga.

Just sell it allready.
Sauga is a scam of a station.
Whiteoaks, CHIN, even CINA will be better off running it.

They are absolutely not true.

He's at another place. Carrasco left the Oakville Nissan dealership a few months back.

Yes, I believe you're right. He's with Direct Nissan, which I thought was in Oakville. But it's actually located in Mississauga.

I worked with Greg a little over 20 years ago. Since then he's worked at every Nissan store in southern Ontario. Also, I called him Greg Carasshole.

Can confirm, that's an apt sobriquet.

Re: Sauga960 Makes A Surprising Claim About Its Listenership

Carrasco is managing partner at direct Nissan. The point about his listeners being far and wide is valid. I occasionally  listen to him via the web in Chelmsford , part of The Greater Sudbury Area.  My wife usually has a honeydo list for Saturdays that keeps me off line after breakfast.

“Sobriquet”, now there’s a word I haven’t heard/read in years! Good one Binson Echorec!
