I ask this question because of what happened to me on the first day of the weekend. I took my dog for a walk Saturday morning just after 8 AM, and as always, took a radio with headphones with me. I tried desperately to find some non-music program worth listening to, but came up empty.
CFRB had the usual CP24 simulcast, which, "as you can see," proves TV still doesn't work on the radio. AM640's Weekend Morning show was off on some tangent about a charity with a long interview that really should have been a one-minute PSA, CBC Radio 1 was playing music, which is not what I was looking for, 680 was endlessly repeating the same stories I'd already heard before I left, and even AM740 was doing some kind of talk show which carried not a scintilla of interesting content. And both The Fan and TSN 1050 were airing U.S. content, talking about completely irrelevant American college sports - or something similar.
Finally, after tuning around for about 10 minutes, I did something I've never done before - turned off the radio in disgust and just listened to the sound of the overly cold wind blowing and the traffic moving.
I get it - Saturday mornings are graveyards as far as the industry is concerned. But surely one station somewhere could come up with a show - even a reroll - that had some entertainment or interest value to it. Maybe I really should turn to podcasts!

RA, you already know Greg Carrasco is on live beginning at 8 am.

Your last two paragraphs show that we're finally getting through . Really though RA, there's a host of stuff out there in podcast land. If I were in your shoes, I would think of your interests and look for podcasts that discuss those (some in great detail). You love dogs, for example, or radio's inner workings. In the latter case there's the Sound Off podcast, with all sorts of radio guests. You even recommended one the other week about Vista now being the largest radio employer (I wish I could remember what that was).
Toronto Mike posts here now and then and may have an extensive list of guests you'd like to hear about on his podcast. Jeff Lumby and his wife Julie have a podcast about moving to France during the pandemic. There's lots to choose from.

Here's a handy page is anyone wants to cherry pick an episode or two. Steve Paikin visits tomorrow for his "exit interview".

Agreed, and Sunday morning is no better. At least 640 airs a live talk program, for which they deserve some credit, but it has to be the most boring thing on radio. When the highlight of the program is the endless butt-kissing events blather from Wally Crouter's kid, you know something is just not working.

The amount of Canadian content that is available is extensive . Once you know your way around its easy to find. I have found a lot of people with a radio or TV background on this platform. Not all last but some like Peter Mansbridge, Toronto Mike, Dave Trafford, Ted Woloshyn, David Herle, Pamela Wallin and others. I am sure the list can be a lot longer if you include the podcasts from the west coast and start including the ones that are focused on a very wide range of topics.

Yes, podcasts are likely the best way to go, but that doesn't excuse on-air stations from pouring out useless drek pretty well all through the weekend.
If you're into trivia then the Sunday morning shit show I guess is not terrible if you can stand listening to an endless stream of instructions on how to play the various games, then hear what'sis face getting questions and answers wrong (on his own show!).
I can't.
I guess what it comes down to is Bell,Chorus etc not being willing to spend money on an interesting host who can talk about a wide variety of topics, and be there to cover something unexpected, like a serious weather event or accident.
I was never a huge fan of Roy Green and his right wing views but at least he had some well informed guests to talk about big issues of the day.
As for podcasts, surely there must be something more appealing than "On The Ledg" rehashing provincial politics, which is talked about every weekday anyway.
