Greg Brady To Make Brief Appearance On AM640 Friday Morning

What's it like to be a guest on your own show? Greg Brady will find out Friday, as he makes his first return to his AM640 home on the final Kevin Frankish morning show. He's sure to talk about his experience of running for the MP seat in Ajax, which he lost to Jennifer McKelvie.

As for Frankish's final day? Just after his 5:30 AM sign-on, he was saying "thank goodness" about not having to get up so early in the morning. Which makes it sound like he won't miss the gig at all.

Brady returns to fultime hosting on Monday.

Frankish also mentioned he'll likely be doing some occasional fill-in for 640 hosts including a few weekends coming up. Weekend host Davelle Morrison likes getaway vacations, so I assume we'll hear Frankish in those early Saturday/Sunday slots sporadically.

Re: Greg Brady To Make Brief Appearance On AM640 Friday Morning

Brady was on at 6:51 AM, which seems odd - I would have saved the interview for the 7 or 8 AM hour when more people were listening.

Brady admits the loss stung and he won't be watching the swearing in of MPs when the day comes. He talked about being up against a 'well oiled machine,' in his opposition. And he admitted he hadn't been up before 5:30 AM (when his radio show starts) in over a month.

He says he was surprised by how many people didn't know him despite his daily media exposure (he should have been on CHFI!) and says he hasn't given up plans to one day run again, perhaps municipally.

Sounds like he'll have a lot more to say when he returns early Monday morning.

I hope that's true. Morrison is not a radio personality but works full time as a real estate agent. Her show often deals with topics related to that and I don't find most of her segments especially compelling. As the only live Toronto talk show on weekend mornings, that's a shame.

Re: Greg Brady To Make Brief Appearance On AM640 Friday Morning

I did not really enjoy Kevin Frankish in the Greg Brady role, but I think he would be great on weekends, and as a fill in host. Morrison is brutal, and frankly, 640 Toronto has better people they could plug into the role. I don't know if Morrison's spot is some mutually beneficial deal between Corus and her real estate business, but I hear guests on 640 who would be more enjoyable than Morrison. I am super happy to tune in at 530am Monday morning and welcome Greg back to my morning routine. Brady, Mulroney, Pierson and Oakley is a very solid lineup. Mike Bendixen has done a wonderful job.

Re: Greg Brady To Make Brief Appearance On AM640 Friday Morning

Frankish is fairly left-leaning and bland, but would be an improvement on the morning show they're presently putting out.  I'm sure Davelle is a lovely person, but abject boredom gets old, even on a Sunday morning.  When consummate tourism shill Crouter is the highlight of the show, flogging a flea market in Stouffville, something ain't working.

I'll give Morrison the fact she has a pleasant radio voice and, arguably, "manner", but I'm increasingly noticing she can't get through many sentences without fumbling words and correcting herself mid-stream, or choosing what I'd consider not an ideal word when talking off the top of her head (i.e. she called the Vancouver SUV attack "incredible" this morning, then quickly had to correct herself, saying something like "tragic - not incredible"). The show's opening monologue, at least, seems scripted (by her), and she chokes on reading those words.

I am not certain many "non-radio" folks could do better, and good on her for exploring this gig, so the above comments are no attack on her - simply an acknowledgment of "you get what you pay for" and installing a host with some radio or communications background often produces a more lucid product and words are everything on talk radio. Morrison is an example of how true radio pros "make it look easy" where Morrison stumbles and fumbles sentences frequently. She also has some annoying running motifs like "TTC shuttle buss hell" due to subway closures and conversations about the weather opening most top-of-show segments. (Weather, the most mundane topic one can speak of for "small talk".)

Incidentally, she indicated Greg Brady will join her on Sunday's (May 4th) show. Not sure if they pretaped that in the week as at least a couple of her segments seem to be or he'll call in live.

I can only imagine hosting a radio show for 2-3 hours is quite a challenge and I have never done it.

I would bet it is paid for time like Greg Carrasco did and does.

Re: Greg Brady To Make Brief Appearance On AM640 Friday Morning

I just heard Greg Brady on the weekend show. It started me wondering: if he had won the riding, he'd be gone from  radio for four years minimum. Was Kevin Frankish the fulltime go-to guy if that had happened? Or would they have tried something else?

The morning show is the most important daypart of any radio station. Did they have an alternate plan if they lost Brady to Ottawa? I guess we'll never know.

Kevin Frankish was not the new morning man if Greg had moved to Ottawa.

Re: Greg Brady To Make Brief Appearance On AM640 Friday Morning

Interesting article, although I thought he'd save most of it for his radio show. But I have one question. How can this be true?

"We had a great thing going on the 640 Toronto morning drive show—“Toronto Today with Greg Brady.” We were the most-listened to talk show in that time slot with key demographics advertisers want to spend dollars on."

Really? What about CBC Radio 1? (Yes, they don't accept ads, but still - does the CBC not have a larger audience, regardless of age?) Surely that easily out rates Brady in the morning.

This guy needs to meet up with 'Buddy Shula', they're made for each other. 🤨

Steve Paikin is on with Greg Brady this morning.  They sound pretty good together.  Sorry Newstalk 1010 time for a refresh on air.

Re: Greg Brady To Make Brief Appearance On AM640 Friday Morning

A refresh indeed.
I usually catch some of John Moore's morning show and increasingly over the last few months I've noticed how repetitive he's becoming, and how for some reason he is using more obscure references without explaining what they are.
He's not alone in this, however.
During the period when people were increasingly expecting Justin Trudeau to resign, various commentators referred to his "walk in the snow."
That refers to when his father Pierre resigned after literally mulling his future over while walking in a snowstorm.
I'm sure many listeners had no idea what the expression meant.
I really think Moore at least needs a steady co-host.
The whole "round table" thing is rather tedious and regimented.
Some clever banter with a co-host would be more entertaining than what Deb Hutton thinks of things.

Yep, CBC Radio 1 is #1 in the morning in the demos he's talking about.

But can clients spend on CBC1? I think that last point of Greg's is somewhat key. Advertisers may opt for CBC1 if they could, but they can't.

Sales department doesn't care, programming might/should.

I'm not sure with certainty but the worst kept secret in the industry is the ensuing arrival of Steve Paikin at 640 Toronto in the relatively near future. You connect the dots.

He was on 640 in the morning on Brady's first show back and I was actually wondering about that very thing.

Paikin was also on Davelle Morrison's 640 weekend show both Saturday and Sunday (replaying the same pre-taped interview, both days). Ostensibly about his upcoming "The Agenda" retirement, but sure making a big deal about him.
