There's no question Donald Trump's endless rantings about the content of some "60 Minutes" stories has put intense pressure on CBS network owner Paramount. But the show has always stood its ground, as recently as this month, airing two controversial stories on the war in Ukraine and the threatened U.S. annexing of Greenland, both on the same show.
Each story earned furious condemnation from Trump, who wanted to pull CBS' license to broadcast. (Even though CBS itself is a network and not a broadcaster per se, it does own many TV channels.)
Up until now, American TV's oldest news magazine, on the air since 1968, has held its ground. But when only the third executive producer in the storied show's history resigned on Tuesday, it hit the Eye Network like a bomb. And while Bill Owens doesn't say so in his resignation letter, no one doubts where the pressure came from. He cites an increasing inability to make his own decisions for the departure.
It's another sign of how hard it remains to stand up for good journalism in a country that appears to be veering towards totalitarianism.
And yes, this story is political, but it's a sign of something we all need to be aware of, as the noose on free speech, once the most cherished right down south, appears to be tightening again.
This is simply stunning news. And, I fear, it's not the last headline like this we'll be seeing.

I wonder what Andy Rooney would have said about Trump et al.
Would he be muzzled too, or fired?
Or would he have turned out to be a MAGA too?
Perish the thought.

Speaking of broadcasting, another defeat for the Orange one - the ordered restoration of the Voice of America and others.
Although there's no way of knowing if he'll obey any judge.
You can be sure it will be appealed forever.

Since when are news stations really apolitical? They may claim to be, but it didn't escape my notice that the moment our own PM (Trudeau, not Carney) had announced changes to the capital gains so that the wealthier Canadians would pay more, every single news station began chanting for him to resign until he had no choice but to quit. The rich are always going to have a strong influence over the news and how it is covered.
It's no accident either that Carney specifically said he wasn't going forward on those capital gains changes early on in his campaign. He needed the news coverage on his side if he had any hope of winning and that meant catering to the millionaires and billionaires that own the networks up here.

Hold onto your (MAGA) hats. Here we go again, this Sunday. Should be a fun watch especially since you know the guy in the corner (oval?) office of the White House will be seething as it airs.
'60 Minutes' to Take on Trump Again Amid Reports of Corporate 'Meddling'

Sunday's edition of 60 Minutes took on the Orange Ogre in the Oval Office for a second straight week. This time, it was a number of legal firms that Trump went after because they prosecuted him before the election. He passed a completely illegal and wholly Unconstitutional order that threatened not only the lawyers involved but could have put their high-earning firms out of business.
You just know he'll be furious with CBS again, and it will be very informative to watch how network management, with a major merger in the works, responds.
It's a fascinating (but very disturbing) segment if you haven't seen it and you can check it out here:

The man is irredeemable as is America for electing him twice.
Broadcasters, lawyers, corporate CEOs and boards better grow a pair soon. Thank god my maternal ancestors were United Empire Loyalists who fled New York State in the late 1780s.
Madness. All of it.

Canada’s election to defeat Trump was contested a week ago and yet some continue the campaign.

Well the campaign in Australia to defeat the orange one was only a day ago and it was a labor landslide moreover the campaign worldwide is an ongoing concern. Who can afford to sit back ?

60 Minutes is one of my favorite news programs, watched it for decades.
Suddenly I am quite fearful that it is going to get cancelled. But it will go out fighting against a tyrannical dick, and after whatever civil war is going to have to happen to get rid of the corrupted arm of the Republicans, it will hopefully come back.
Here's the video of tonight's segment in case people don't want to read the transcript.
I think this part sums up what is at stake here:
Scott Pelley: If the president brings the legal profession to heel what situation is the country in then?
John Keker: No rule of law. You're in a dictatorship. That's what's happened in China. It happened in Russia. These are legal systems that look like legal systems, but in fact are controlled by a dictatorship.
Everybody around the world knows that elections in Russia and China are a joke. The government writes the rules to ban any serious contender trying to run for the opposition, or just tosses them into prison on whatever justification they can dream up. Trump has already stated several times how much he respects both Putin and Xi Jinping, especially for the control that they hold over their countries. We're not going to get a fair election in 4 years... it's going to be an election where everyone knows it's a joke and that the victor has already been chosen.

It just keeps getting more frightening. Let's hope shows like 60 Minutes do not give up the fight or there may be no one left to decry these illegal injustices. But I guess pulling licences is better than threatening execs. with jail, like they do in Russia or China. But you have to wonder if that's next.

CBS as a network doesn’t even have a license. What the FCC has jurisdiction over with CBS is the individual stations they own (the O&Os) - WCBS New York, KYW Philadelphia, WBBM Chicago, KCBS/KCAL Los Angeles, and so forth. But there are many other CBS affiliates not owned by the network, such as WIVB Buffalo or WWNY Watertown.
Not like Canada where the CRTC licenses networks, or where almost all the stations with a network are O&Os.

Years ago a WNY pundit repeated the wisdom someone else had authored about voters: the average rural Republican voter would gladly self castrate, if their millionaire representatives in Washington advocated for it. And that's before this stain on humanity (Trump) came along.

And to their collective shame, those who know better stay quiet, leaving plenty of bandwidth for all the fawning morons who populate right-wing media, his own Cabinet and what used to be the Republican Party.

Redstone had conversations with various Paramount executives, among them George Cheeks, the Paramount co-CEO who oversees the CBS business, about certain “60 Minutes” stories, according to a person familiar with the matter. Redstone asked whether stories that could irritate Trump were correct and balanced, and inquired whether multiple stories that might draw Trump’s ire had to run on the same night, this person says. Two other people familiar with the “60 Minutes” editorial process say Zirinsky and her team were specifically tasked with examining stories tied concerning the Middle East and politics.
Redstone never issued any edicts about stories tied to Trump policies, says the person familiar with the situation, noting that the show has run such reports all season long. At this point, the person adds, with the current TV season drawing to a close, there is no reason to hold off on any stories the show has in the pipeline, as any acquisition by Skydance is not likely to be completed in that time frame.
