New Doc: From Famed Cdn. TV Sportscaster To Convicted Bank Robber

I don't have Amazon Prime but if you do, this documentary should be on your must watch list - the story of how one local Canadian sportscaster went to jail for robbing banks, despite his famous face.

The show traces the story of Steve Vogelsang, whose name likely means little to Ontario residents, but resonates with viewers in Manitoba. He was a long time famous face on Winnipeg's CKY TV, acting as a sportscaster on their nightly news program (back in the days when stations still had sportscasters) and later went on to become their news director and an instructor at a local college.

So how did he find himself inside several banks, demanding money or else from frightened tellers? That's the story of "The Sexiest Man In Winnipeg," which recounts the incredible story of how one man went from fame and fortune on TV to armed heists at banks - and ultimately a prison cell.

You don't have to know who he was to find the trailer, narrated by Arrested Development actor Will Arnett, fascinating. It debuts on Amazon Prime on May 9th.

Only fitting that an off kilter bank robber's story would be narrated by an oddball Bluth family member.  I won't say oddest, since GOB and Buster were equally as warped. 😁

As unusual as the story above is, it's not the first time this has happened - and one of them hit very close to home.

In the mid-70's, Frank Benny was a huge personality on WGR-AM Buffalo, and frequently appeared on Channel 2, as well. Which means he was very well known.

So when he was arrested holding a gun in a bank, everyone in Western New York and Southern Ontario was stunned. How could one of the most famous people in town end up as a bank robber? Even more incredible, after facing justice, he wound up back in radio and all seemed to be forgiven.

Here's a look back at the Benny story and how he went from making a fortune to trying to steal one.
