This story from the Canadian Press posits that while the big players are expanding their local TV newscasts across the country - including Toronto - making it profitable will be another issue entirely. While a Rogers exec. insists their anchorless CityNews format will attract Millenials - and by extension, advertisers who covet them - others aren't so sure that they're sincere in the efforts to fill the CRTC mandate.
"Ian Morrison, spokesman for the watchdog group Friends of Canadian Broadcasting, said he’s taking the announcements about local news expansion with a grain of salt.
“I don’t think they’re investing more money. I think they’re spreading the existing money more thinly,” said Morrison. “They’re pouring water into their wine, and eventually when you pour water into wine, it’s really water and not wine."
This story appeared on several different websites, but I linked to the one on Rogers-owned CityNews because I find it amusing that they (or their software) chose to run the CP provided picture that accompanies it - a giant full screen CTV logo.
As Canadian stations expand local news, experts wonder how successful it will be

They'll just do a lot more repeaters to fill time and less live content. (at least, that's how Citynews seems to be doing it now between 5 and 7 pm weekdays...)
