This New Radio Ad Is Both Abysmal & Baffling

We often talk about awful ads here, and now there's a new one. It's so terrible, I almost have to listen to it to see if it's really as bad as it seems.

It's for a drug called Wegovy, being marketed as a weight loss aid. But under the ridiculous Canadian laws, they're not allowed to tell you what it's for and advise you instead to ask your doctor about it.

The problem? The spot consists of a very irritating woman singing an extremely annoying song, repeating the drug's name over and over. At one point, near the end of this epic, she starts singing nonsense words just to make things rhyme. (Something like "na-na-na bang bang bang" or lyrics - if you can call them that - similar.)

It's brand new to the local airwaves and so far, I've heard it at least five times in less than a few hours.

Never mind weight loss - if this keeps playing, I'll take a drug that causes hearing loss. It will be better than listening to this over and over again. Has anyone else heard this atrocity yet? Let's hope it's a short lived campaign or I'll be begging for Fiona to return.

Re: This New Radio Ad Is Both Abysmal & Baffling

I heard it on 1010 at my co-workers radio.  I said to myself, "I just KNOW that RA will mention this before long".  Yes that is a TERRIBLE commercial.

One that bugs me for some reason (I guess it really shouldn't) is the blood donor commercial that has ran since before Christmas.  The girl and guy are co-hosting as though it were a sports show, and discuss the the numbers of donors increasing, all the while saying how much they need to reach their target.  Then the female voice talent stops speaking and says, "Is that another donor?  It's another donor!"  Well what bugs me is that twice, she repeat the phrase "blooood pumping".  I think it irritates me the way the read comes off, just because of the insane amount of repetition.  The way "blood" is sustained, and "pumpin' " is hurried and truncated sounding starts to grate on me.  I'm sure it's on the voice session producer who is providing direction to the talent, but on repeated listening, you start to memorize all of the voice talent's idiosyncrasies.  Is that just me?

Re: This New Radio Ad Is Both Abysmal & Baffling

Not surprised RA posted about this woman's "performance."

I've only heard this new irritating as nails on chalkboard, Donald Trump talking, any picture of PP, radio spot twice this morning on 1010 and both times I wanted to lunge for the volume dial.

I loathe the Kars for Kids jingle, am not keen on the single awful note start of Lion King ad and the Spence ads are..well, they're the *Spence ads* and so therefore are aural itching powder but I would rather hear all three of these back to back and throw in a "Mega Tank!" than wince through this newest commercial terror of the airwaves once.

We-go-oy-vey

It's a good bet that 1010's board ops turn down the monitor when the W ad is running.

p.s. am getting a kick out of the new sponsor for 1010's traffic (I think) it's a product to cure erectile disfunction. now they just need to develop and market one to cure politically correct-ile disfunction and the world will be a better place

p.p.s. have not heard the not good very terrible blood donor spot, yet, so that's something to look forward to, thanks Jody, I think?

Re: This New Radio Ad Is Both Abysmal & Baffling

Haven't heard the Wegovy ad yet but I have been hating some others.
One is for a product I still can't make out (remember) but it features a loud clacking sound like somebody tapdancing in wooden clogs on a marble floor.
Tak a taka taka tak tak!! I can't stand it.
The blood donor ad also annoys me because it pretends to be a fund raising show like a telethon, but there is only the one ad so the amount is forzen with the man and woman swooning over how close they are to their goal.
As for MEGA TANK.... aaaargghhh! I hate ads in general where one of the characters is really stupid.  In this case a squeaky voiced woman who keeps getting the name wrong.  Mega Whhaaat?
And god knows why that bloody Kars for Kids ad still plays.
I switch off the sound immediately.
There's also a weird trrend  in radio ads I've noticed.
There are several now where the ads open with somebody exclaiming "Yuuuck" in disgust with something.
Somewhere out there there's a young ad writer who thinks this is a catchy way to start an ad.
All I can say is YUUUUchk!
As for Spence... Their ads just keep being sort of weird and pointless.
For god sake Michael, shtup with Sarah for once and get it over with.

Re: This New Radio Ad Is Both Abysmal & Baffling

Heard the Wegovy commercial twice yesterday morning on 1010 and at first I thought it was a gag they were going to discuss! Oddly, I did not hear it on any of the other stations I tuned into during the course of the day. I have been listening to 1010 for just over an hour this morning and it hasn’t aired yet, wondering if they got inundated with complaints about it!

Whoever did this study obviously doesn't listen to radio in this market.

Re: This New Radio Ad Is Both Abysmal & Baffling

I don't know the agency or voice artist who was doing the Ontario Ford dealer commercials advertising parts and service on radio a few years back, but they were creative and funny.  One addressed finely tuned race cars zooming around the track, and at the last moment, you weren't sure if you were listening to cars or cats.

It also seems that the rule of 'good pipes' in order to have a radio career or radio advertising talent no longer applies.  I won't say it's an exception, but a business owner voicing his own radio ads often is a bad choice.  Tom Carvel School of Advertising.

Unusually kvetchy this morning, I am.  The coffee hasn't kicked in yet. 😁

So I listened to John Moore on 1010 since just after 6am and the Wegovy spot hasn’t aired once that I have heard, odd.

Re: This New Radio Ad Is Both Abysmal & Baffling

Have always hated commercials where "Fake New Anchors" are making the pitch.
The one that bothers me now is for Bet365 presented as a News  event featuring a marathon race where a guy is running with a fridge on his back?!  The anchors are reporting on it but why on earth would they stand up and cheer  with other observers when he wins??!  I thought  News anchors/reporters were supposed to be unbiased.....unless they work for Fox News.

I heard it on 1010 at some point during the AM drive. I think it's only running in the morning, because I don't recall hearing it during the afternoon drive on Monday.

Re: This New Radio Ad Is Both Abysmal & Baffling

Was lucky enough to not hear it during MITM today.

I have yet another awful ad nomination: the newish Sleep Country ad about the invisible to the eye crawlies that build up on our pillows is mite-ily creepy.

Sidebar: I also popped on here to see if anyone on the big yellow board had posted on how the Hooters bankruptcy was covered or uncovered on the radio shows this morning cause of all the rich headline possibilities but nada...

My top two, pun intended:

Hooters Bankruptcy: School of hard knockers.

Hooters Front Closure: Thanks for the mammaries.

I did enjoy the way the Hooters topic was touched on during John Moore's show, the talk was tongue in cheek and not foot in mouth.

Finally heard the Wegovy (sp?) commercial.  The only way that thing could possibly be worse would be if Fiona was the singer.

Re: This New Radio Ad Is Both Abysmal & Baffling

For once I heard Jerry Agar actually say something witty.
He was commenting on Hooters going bankrupt.
John Moore suggested he had a pun but could not say it on radio.
Agar indicated what Moore wanted to say by adding, "Tango Uniform,"
the military initials for T.U... what Moore wanted to say (tits up).
That was funny.
Just proves even Agar can actually say something clever.

Google research shows:  The ad agency responsible for the Ontario Ford Dealers account is GTB, a joing venture between WPP agencies Young & Rubicam, Mindshare and Wunderman, dedicated to Ford of Canada and its dealerships across Canada.
