I was surprised to hear AM640 actually do a real, live talk show on Saturday in Roy Green's old 2-5 PM slot - and it wasn't paid time.
But I still can't quite figure out what the point of it was. It didn't seem to have a name, so I'll call it "The Brad Smith Show" after its erstwhile host. Smith was one of the on-air types on City's Breakfast Television about a decade ago. He's since gone on to be the first specimen on the Canadian version of The Bachelor and is now featured on a number of reality cooking shows that turn up on cable. He's also a former CFL player.
Which is certainly an eclectic resume.
The only problem I had with his show, which started with him talking endlessly about how uncomfortable he was to be on the radio, (maybe not the best way to start your own show) was it had no real focus. What, exactly, was it supposed to be about?
His guests were a hodgepodge of people who all seemed to be either friends (Cheryl Hickey, the former co-host of "Entertainment Tonight Canada" was one example) or family members. (He interviewed his father, Larry, also a former CFLer and a Canadian senator.) But none of it seemed to go anywhere.
Was it a relationship show? A political one? A program about issues? Nothing seems to fit. It was mostly just him talking to his guests for three hours about, well, nothing much at all. I can't quite figure out what he was trying to do, although to be honest, it's never fair to judge someone by their very first show.
I can't tell if he'll be back on Sunday or what will happen to these three hours in the future, especially because he didn't say if he was returning for the rest of the weekend.
I congratulate 640 for trying to at least not air reruns. But a show with a specific point that doesn't ramble in that time slot would be helpful. As it stands now, I have no idea what the show was supposed to be about. I hope they zero in on a focus if it returns. Otherwise, why bother?

As far as I can tell, it was 640 only. They kept throwing to break saying "You're listening to AM640 in Toronto." I know the host was new to radio, but I don't think he would have kept saying that if they were on the network.

Whatever they were doing on Saturday, they didn't repeat it 24 hours later. A reroll of the Ben Mulroney Show came on at 2 PM Sunday. Was the Brad Smith thing a one-off or an on-air audition? I suppose time will tell.

I too caught some of Brad Smith’s show on Saturday and found him a bit disjointed, but pleasant. Not too sure I’ll be tuning back though.

Brad Smith was back on AM640 Saturday afternoon and this go round was much, much better. It was focused and they were actually talking about subjects that were interesting and that mattered, including the pending election announcement and reactions to what's going on with you-know-who at the White House.
I noticed at the end, he again did not promo his return next week, but if this was another test run, it was considerably better than the first one and it has a real chance of working if they can stay focused on topics that matter. (Even if he did bring his dad back on for a second appearance!)
It's better than a reroll and I hope they keep him on while he finds his comfort zone in radio.

For what it's worth, the program schedule on the 640 website now has "640 Weekend Show" listed on both Saturdays and Sundays from 2-5.

I was going to say I hoped that meant someone is finally updating their webpage. But then I see that Kelly Cutrara, Roy Green and the recent leave-of-absence morning man Greg Brady are all still listed on their "Personalities" page - while Ben Mulroney and Kevin Frankish are nowhere to be found.
Pretty sloppy to list three people who are no longer there.

Back to rerolls on Sunday, with a repeat of a Ben Mulroney show. It was especially dated, as he kept talking about Mark Carney being "expected" to call an election - something that actually happened two hours before the rerun aired.

People's eyeballs are so far up Facebook's behind that management figures no one is looking at the station website anyway.
