The prolific actor was found dead in his New Mexico home, along with his wife and his dog. It's a mystery worthy of a Hackman movie, but the early suspect is carbon monoxide poisoning, with authorities saying foul play is not suspected.
Hackman was nominated for five Oscars and won two, the first for his instantly epic role of "Popeye" Doyle in the "French Connection "and later for "Unforgiven.".He was 95.

An autopsy reveals what appears to have killed the actor and his wife, and it's even more tragic than anyone could have guessed, including how dementia may have played a part in Hackman's passing and a virus that infected his spouse. And it all may have started with rodent droppings.
Evidence also indicates Hackman may have wandered around the house with his wife's body in another room, unaware she was dead.
Gene Hackman died of heart disease, his wife died of hantavirus about 1 week prior, authorities say

Further details including a sad but unsurprising story, if you know and love dogs, about how the first responders were assisted by the surviving pets.
