What if a network staged a radio and TV call of a hockey game even when they're not showing it? That's the very unusual situation as the Washington Capitals' Alex Ovechkin is within a few goals of Wayne Gretzky's all time goal record.
The Monumental Sports Network (MNMT) will have Capitals' play-by-play voice Joe Beninati call every game - even if the rights are given over to another broadcaster. What happens if the history maker is on a national network?
"For the four remaining games airing exclusively on national networks, MNMT will produce its own broadcasts for archival purposes. If Ovechkin’s historic moment occurs during one of these national games, MNMT will release recorded video and audio of Beninati’s call, ensuring Capitals fans can experience the milestone from their familiar broadcast team."
Imagine calling a game no one can see or hear just to preserve some hockey history. Of course, if Ovechkin doesn't make the milestone this season, you have to wonder how long they'll keep it up.

Points for creativity I guess? Could you imagine if we didn't have Tom Cheek's "Touch 'em all, Joe!" in the archives?
The single most iconic call in Blue Jays' history. Unforgettable.
And by the way, I've never forgotten the incredible grace of Jerry Howarth during the first 1992 World Series win against Atlanta. It was Howarth's turn to call that 10th inning and he turned it over to Cheek, who had been there since the beginning, so he could call the final out. What a class act he was.

Turns out Beninati did get to call it, and I guess he can finally relax for the rest of the season.

Good. Now we just need to permanently revoke Wayne's Canadian citizenship and deport him, and have Agent Orange send Ovi back to Russia.

A Putin stooge passing a record held by a Trump stooge. I passed on the whole event.

The irony of a Russian breaking Regretsky's goal scoring record is not lost on me.

Over thirty years ago witnessing Gretzky surpass the unsurpassable goal scoring record held by Howe, I was pretty sure I’d never live to see that record of Gretzky’s be surpassed as well.
Never say never, I guess.
Good on Ovie.

Can we just celebrate 2 players that brought us joy, were fantastic to watch them play and how well they played the game?
Why do we need to share our negativity and make it about where they are from, and where their politics may lie. Emphasis on the word "May".
The negativity and left wing bias on this board sickens me sometimes.
It is an amazing feat to do what Ovi and Gretzky did, no matter where they are from and who they may side with,

I share your concerns about the political negativity, and I've tried - unsuccessfully - to root much of it out. It's virtually impossible to eliminate it entirely, as I've discovered to my dismay. But with a federal election on, it's also impossible to keep away from it, especially in areas like funding for the CBC, political commercials and defunding PBS and NPR in the States are concerned, since those are broadcasting stories that do have a place here.
Unfortunately, it sometimes wanders off that into something else. It's a delicate balance and I also agree that both sides - left and right - are so polarized no one ever seems willing to listen to each other and there's little tolerance for an opinion some don't agree with. I personally like to hear both sides when I listen to a radio talk show, although it's often more a single opinion than an actual debate.
Hopefully, when we get past April 28th, it will die down a bit. - although there's still another four years to go before things improve down south. Take a deep breath and keep on truckin'. It will get here eventually! And know that we'll never be the 51st state. After all, where would that put that extra star on their flag?
