Matt announced this morning that he's taking a vacation day and Mike Stafford will co-host Thursday's show. A day off for Matt, and also a chance for the listeners to hear Supriya interact with someone else. Wonder why they are trying this out now.

It certainly speaks volumes (pun intended) when one member of a morning show duo cannot be trusted to do a good job (for ONE day) by themselves!

I enjoy listening to Michael Stafford.
I enjoy listening to (and even voted for) Peter Shurman

So...you're obviously willing to share that sandwich. I'll take the right half.

I would think that they're trying "this" out now for 2 reasons. [both obvious to me.]
1. People are away on vacation. Fill-ins are therefore required. Happens every summer!!!
2. It's radio FIRING season. Cheaper is the budgetary requirement. Happens every summer!!!

Hmmm true. But their morning team was just on vacation. And why can't Supriva handle the gig solo and leave Stafford at his regular slot?
I'd be getting a box ready and steal as many office supplies now before security escorts me out of the building. 🤔😳

Also worth noting that Kelly Cutrara is off the rest of the week. Her replacement? Former city councillor and Tory MPP Chris Stockwell, who cut his radio teeth first on CFRB's roundtables, then on 640's similar panel. I believe it will be the first time he's ever done a show on his own.

Old Codger's observation that fill-in shifts happen every summer is absolutely true....
So far I've heard the Newstalk Supriya (confident) and the 640 Supriya (self-effacing). Like actors and athletes, people working in radio on-air can be elevated or enervated by the talent they work with, and environment they're in. I bet a lot of our contributors/readers have lived through, and could give examples of both. Stafford's filling in tomorrow is a win/win.

Hoping a host from another timeslot increases listenership is a recipe for disaster. Methinks firing season will be cruel to Sowny's favourite whipping boy.
cGrant...maybe 'they' were "just" away...and maybe ol' who'sizzarse just found about about the colonoscopy while he was away??? Who nose?
It doesn't smell THAT fishy. Anyway Mike appears to be safe. Doubtful they're checking to see how he stands up when coupled with a REAL talent. T'ain't HIS last chance to make it or break it. Although he may be making more than is actually safe to make per month. What is that monthly number NOWADAYS in radio? $1,500.? It's going down...not 'up'...right?

Chris is a firecracker that NEEDS a show...I would listen 7-9p instead of that reroll

Well, she fairly new to it, isn't she? Hell, they won't even let Ryan Doyle solo and he's been kicking around for more than 20 years.
And on the subject of guest hosts, when Daryn Jones sits in, I can never figure out who's talking, they sound so much alike. Anyone else notice that?

With John Moore on vacation for the rest of this week, and all of next, Dave Trafford has been sitting in, and the Newstalk morning show is in good hands. Joey Vendetta has moved back to Toronto from L.A., he's been guest hosting the Fan590 morning show this week with Greg Brady, and doing a bang-up job. All in all, it's going to be "a great day for talk radio."

I didn't listen. Was Stafford as good as the Yellow Sages had predicted? Did he lay waste to morning rivals with his unimpeachable intelligence and rapier wit?

Stafford is off for 2 weeks so I have no idea what the schedule looks like. Is Shurman in? Bonnar?
Ryan Bonnar left the station about a month or so ago to work in marketing. I'm pretty sure that means he's no longer available for fill-in duty. AM 640 substitutes, in addition to Shurman, have been Andrew Lawton from CFPL, Lorne Honickman and Chris Stockwell. But only if they have the time free to do it.
In some cases this summer they have their regular hosts do their own shifts and then come back later in the day to do a second person's gig. It explains why Matt Gureny was on in the morning last week and then turned up a few hours later for yet another shift. That's a sad comentary on how Corus staffs the place.
