If you're a listener to CBC Radio 1's advertising and marketing show "Under The Influence," you might have noticed how odd it sounded this weekend. Host Terry O'Reilly's voice was different - it seemed to lack that deep bass it usually has - and there was what seemed like unnecessary canned laughter in parts of it.
I tuned in about 3 minutes late and couldn't figure out why it sounded so weird. Why was O'Reilly's voice so odd? Where was the usual "Terstream" studio quality? (It was explained at the beginning in a brief 15 sec. intro, which I missed.)
It wasn't until the end of episode that I discovered the reason for the different tone. This episode had been taped live in front of a studio audience at Reid's Distillery in Toronto and that laughter I thought was canned was actually real.
I prefer the studio quality version but I'm sure it was a nice diversion to take the show on the road. And the audience seemed to enjoy the episode about what happens when brands fail. You can hear this unusual show here.
