Ron Tevernit isn't exactly a household name here, but those near the border may remember him from stations like WOMC in Detroit. He worked in radio for over 30 years and was looking for something to do after he retired. Now 75, Tevernit has filled his downtime by writing a book called "How The Heck Did They Get Those Names?"
It reviews the origins of the monikers of some of the most famous artists from the 60s and 70s, including The Beatles, Chubby Checker and Conway Twitty.
To be honest, the names revealed in the article below I already knew about, but I always find these kinds of origin stories interesting.
“If you grew up listening to rock and roll music from the 50s, 60s and 70s, you might be interested to know how groups and singers from that era got their names,” said Tavernit in announcing the book’s release. “When I played their music, I became intrigued with how and why they selected those names and if it was actually them that picked them (in many cases it was not). The more research I did, the more interesting it became.”

Finding out the story behind the name was one of the first things I did when putting together a radio feature on a band or solo artist because it's such a cool detail.
The origin of Steely Dan was an eye opener and the meaning behind Spandau Ballet is something I would have rather not discovered, now even more so.
This book is going on my TBR list.
Thanks RA.

There is another book that I have called "Rock Names" by music writer Adam Dolgins. It covers mostly the same ground but was published in 1998. Not sure if it's still in print, but you can find out online.
Under "Steely Dan" it says:
"They took the name from a milk-spurting dildo in the William Burrough's novel "Naked Lunch."
And you're right - we were better off not knowing!

Just to set the record straight, I did not set any kind of word censorship on this forum. Maybe something from Boardhost?
