Toronto Plane Crash Collides With Ont. Leaders Debate

What an incredible moment in terrible timing. On a cold, snowy and sleepy holiday Monday in Toronto, with either no news people or skeleton crews filling in throughout most stations, comes a world shattering headline - that Delta plane crash at Pearson International Airport.

There is no small irony that to get the latest on the story most people in the province had to turn to U.S. sources. The reason? Nearly every broadcaster had committed to taking the Ontario election debate live, including all the local TV stations and nearly every news or talk radio outlet.

It started at the same time as a press conference about the crash, but there was no local media to take it, having scheduled the debate instead. To add insult to injury, because of the political tete-a-tete, all the local TV newscasts that would have gone hog wild on this story, were forced to truncate their coverage to just 30 minutes to get off the air in time for the 6:30 PM yakfest.

I've been in news a long time, but I don't think I've ever seen such a bizarre and coincidental confluence of events taking place in this city - where the entire world is watching, but you have to look elsewhere at least temporarily to get the latest updates over broadcast media for a local story. This is definitely one for the books.

In aviation terminology it's called a negative event cascade.

CTV News has the debate streaming live right now on their YouTube channel and one can't help but notice Doug Ford has learned that skill mastered by only the most talented of performers, he can talk (wearing the most artificial grimace) whilst showing a lot of his pearly whites, upper AND lower, at the same time!. It's very strange to watch and quite distracting.🙄

NBC had great coverage, better than any local news I watched at 6:00.   They had camera from a passenger on the tarmac with a close up of the plane, shots from inside by the same passenger, 2 aviation specialists to interview and a bunch of other camera angles I didn't see elsewhere.   They didn't have a reporter on scene though, which is interesting considering the comparatively extensive coverage they did in their short national segment.   The local reporters had no I idea what caused it and relied on limited official statements while NBC had plenty of expertise on tap.

And Doug Ford himself seemed clueless, as he was apparently preparing for his great debate.
He was quoted as saying he was glad there were no casualties, while all other news coverage said there were eight people injured, three critical.

Re: Toronto Plane Crash Collides With Ont. Leaders Debate

Well, the irony is not lost on me that the local newscasts here had to speed up their coverage because they only had a half hour instead of their usual 60 minutes. Which meant that CFTO gave the plane crash just over four minutes, while NBC, which I also watched, devoted 9 minutes to the story. And yes, they had experts the Canadian stations, in holiday mode, didn't have access to.

As for the debate, I listened to some of it, and  - at least at the beginning - all the candidates were constantly talking over each other, making it impossible to hear any of them. It's a danger whenever they do this, and it's like politics on this board - seemingly impossible to stop! I was kind of disappointed in the moderator for not reining them in more.

To be fair, it got better as it went along.

A final note - 680 did not take the debate, leaving it free to cover the unfolding story of the plane crash. And yes, the national Canadian news networks did have the aviation story, as opposed to the political gabfest. But the crash happened on home turf and is making headlines around the world. Frankly, that pales in comparison to a bunch of bloviating politicians making promises they have no intention of keeping.

Seems more likely that he's using the word "casualty" in the very commonly incorrect way.

Re: Toronto Plane Crash Collides With Ont. Leaders Debate

Always interesting who had the story and when.  CTV News Channel had the breaking news first at 2:53 this afternoon and soon after with video from the chopper.  CP24 first reported as lead story at 3pm, CBC News Network at 3:09 and CNN first reported at 3:17.

CNN picked up all their video from CTV.   Interesting that CTV News Channel didn't carry the Ontario election debate live and opted for the press conference for the Pearson accident.  CBC mostly stuck with the plane coverage and covered the press conference.  They did pick up the debate eventually after the press conference.

Both CTV and CBC had the whole debate live on line.

I would say of the two main locals, CFRB had a vastly better post-debate show.

On AM640, Greg Brady and Alex Pierson exchanged views about the back and forth. They did take listener calls, where the others didn't.

CFRB had a special radio edition of the Dave Trafford podcast "On The Ledge." Among his guests: Tim Hudak, Deb Hutton, Lyndsay Broadhead, Keith Leslie and John Wright. A much better group for post-debate analysis.

Re: Toronto Plane Crash Collides With Ont. Leaders Debate

According to Tom Mulcair on CTV News Channel, Doug Ford won the debate.  He felt the debate didn't move the needle for any of the other leaders.  He said that Ford and Mike Schreiner of the Green Party performed the best and Ford was correct to focus on the economy.
