Wow. I've heard of screw ups, but what happened on the Daily Debrief political panel discussion on the 1 PM version of Vassy Kapelos' Show on iHeart (CFRB here) Thursday was just insane. The first five minutes consisted of the guest host, Tim Powers, who is obviously not a full time radio person, unable to cope with technical issues.
He did a brief intro and then called on his first guest. A long silence.
He went to his second guest. The same long silence.
Finally, he tried to intro guest #3. That pundit responded he could hear the host, and then he, too, disappeared into the ether.
The befuddled guest host then asked what was going on, asking to take a commercial break to get things sorted. The problem? The show has a very specific network clock and they could not go to a break early. That was followed by about 30 secs. of dead air and in desperation, the board op segued to the theme, which ran uninterrupted for almost 50 secs.
All live on Bell stations across the country! What a mess!
They finally got their act together and the show started five minutes late, by which time it was almost time for the break he'd called for earlier.
I'm not making fun of anyone - I've been there, done that. But boy, when it's in real time, it's cringeworthy.

I heard it as well, RA. I like Vassy's style and was listening at lunchtime and I couldn't figure out, when I tuned in, why there was dead air. One would think that someone in the production/ technical area would've noticed and addressed the issue.

She's off today, but I think it's safe to say with her on-air experience, she would have handled it better.

Not sure why they still call it the Vassy Kapelos show anymore. As a regular listener, it seems she's away far more than she's there these days, which is a shame.

I heard this in the car. The heavy breathing made me laugh.

1010 had technical problems all day. There were several moments John Moore and then later on in the morning Jerry Agar couldn't hear a guest or a caller or the person who was speaking suddenly dropped off and John and Jerry nimbly kept their cool during multiple patches of the dreaded dead air.
I'm not sure it was the same glitch all day but if it was, the folks in the production department may have been unable to solve the issue.

The difference is Agar and Moore are radio pros, even if you're not a fan of either. They know how to pivot. The substitute host had no idea what to do and it sounded like it.

Didn't hear it RA but it must have been annoying and unprofessional. Which is why you need someone who can think on their feet filling in on a show. I would like to know if anyone, like the program director, gave the guy a heads up beforehand on what to do if things go south.
In my opinion Scott Reid is the only person who can more than adequately fill in on that show.

Now we know where Vassy was all this time. She returned to her radio show on Wednesday, telling her audience about a very nasty case of the flu that kept her off air for several days. You can still hear it in her voice and it may take a while before she's 100% back to normal.

I was taking the dog out for one last walk Wednesday night in the midle of a snow storm and turned on CTV National News on CFRB, for want of anything else to listen to. What I heard was more interesting than the headlines.
The simulcast started as it normally does, with the theme music, the intro to Omar Sachedina and into the first story, about Canada's Premiers getting a meeting at the White House. Halfway through reporter Judy Trinh's report, however, the audio blinked out.
After a moment of dead air, that was followed by the same intro we just heard moments before, but they didn't finish that, either. Before we got back to Omar, the audio cut out again. This time, they played the entire CTV National News Theme uninterrupted and with no intro. It ran for over a minute.
That was followed by - you guessed it, the same teasers we'd just heard twice before. In this case, the third time was the charm and the show started all over again, this time playing through as it should.
But by now it was 11:04 PM and the national show was cut off at the end to make sure the 11:30 CFTO local news started on time.
And I thought the weather was bad! This was a blizzard of errors. But at least it didn't gum up the roads.
