Several Toronto Radio Stations Make Subtle Statements Over Tariffs

It's subtle, but it's there.

CFRB began its morning show on Monday by playing all Canadian bumper music during its first hour, as a sign of support for the country about to be besieged by U.S. tariffs.

Meanwhile, over on AM640, they're airing ID liners calling the place a 'proudly Canadian radio station.'

Not sure how long this will last on air or what other outlets are doing, but as the anger grows, expect to hear more of it.

My favourite moment of the day had to be when a woman called John Moore's show to tell him she'd "moved down the dial" to listen to WBEN-AM to see what they were saying about the tariff issue. Moore feigned faux-outrage that anyone would turn off his show to listen to anything else.

I really appreciated the CanCon music bumpers on 1010 on MITM.

My favorite moment was when a new caller said hello to John Moore, made the usual how ya doing inquiry and John said quite plainly and in a matter of fact tone "I'm anxious." He didn't overplay or underplay the seriousness of what we're facing. Well done Mr. Moore.

A sense of community is an enormous part of the magic of radio and if there's a silver lining in this ongoing trade war coverage it may be that radio has another chance to shore up the value and comfort it brings to Canadians.

I also do what that women does.
I listen to american Conservative radio to sea if they are on our side and don't hate Canada.

Good for CFRB for doing what no social media influencer can do.
Radio broadcasters are still the real influencers.

The music stations nead to play some lesser known and up and coming Cancon.
There's a new Canadian singer getting more airplay.
His name is cameron whitcomb

Global is also running promos telling viewers to show local and Canadian, and touting Global as “proudly Canadian”

Silly of them because they have mostly american shows.
CTV has more cancon than global does.

Yes, Global's promo/PSA is highly ironic coming from them.

Meanwhile, CTV is going to air the biggest American TV broadcast of the year in a few days.

Yeah, and having the power shut off during the Super Bowl would really hit them where it hurts, too.

Turns out other radio stations across the country at least temporarily adopted the "Captain Canada" approach before the tariff delay was announced.

Canadian media responds to U.S. tariffs

If we cut off power during the Super Bowl we would end up with 110% tariffs! Still, it would show ‘em we have a pair!

Don't cair.
I'm not watching the superboll this year unless I go to a superboll houseparty.
My team's not in, and there's some rapper doing the halftime.
