Roy Green Does Two Final Shows This Weekend After Decades On Air

After decades in the radio business, Roy Green is hanging up his mic after two final shows on the weekend. The veteran talk host has been battling stage 4 prostate cancer for years, and he's leaving to concentrate on his health.

The show airs from 2-5 PM on Saturday and Sunday, and it will be sad but interesting to hear what his last words on air may be. He appeared on Greg Brady's show Friday morning, reminiscing about some of his most memorable moments in radio, including covering 911 and the French-Mahaffy murders by Paul Bernardo. He's pledged to appear occasonally on Brady's show, so as long as his health holds, he won't be off the air for good.

It's still not clear what will replace the show starting next weekend. Will Corus opt for a replacement host for the show or go with endless rerolls or worse, infomercials? The argument for a new host is that the show airs on several stations across the country, so for the price of one person, Corus could fill many shifts on many stations all at once.

We'll find out what they chose to do soon.

Best wishes to Roy Green.  His live show was a welcome oasis in the wasteland of weekend talk radio, and I will miss it.  Hopefully, a comparable program will take its place, but if Corus hasn't been promoting the hell out of ever since Roy announced his retirement, I doubt that will be the case.

Well said Walter, and I agree that Corus would have been promoting the hell out of a replacement show if they had one, looking a little bleak at the moment though, too bad. All the best to Roy Green, and thank you!

Thank you Roy for all the entertainment over the years on Saturday and Sundays while I was hauling vehicles around  Ontario in a tilt 'n' load tow truck.

We need to organize and nominate Roy Green for an Order of Canada.

This is indeed a very bittersweet day, seeing this veteran end on his own terms.

It's hard to imagine, but Green has been in radio for an astounding 50+ years, starting at CKGM in Montreal when he was just 16 years old. Pretty amazing career and I will miss the show. I have no idea what I'll be listening to on the weekends after this Sunday. (He has pledged to continue to be an occasional guest pundit on several Corus stations during other people's shows, so I'm assuming we'll still hear him from time to time.)

From Joe Warmington in The Toronto Sun, also a guest on Green's final show. I had no idea Green is 78!

Re: Roy Green Does Two Final Shows This Weekend After Decades On Air

I’m sure many of us here tuned in Roy’s last shows over the weekend. When he was signing off on Sunday, I realized that I had just heard a great Canadian broadcaster hang up his headphones and It made me a bit blue to tell the truth. I would tune in at least once a weekend over the years and realized that now there isn’t really much I’m interested in during that time slot. AM640 has not updated their schedule but I suspect that there’s nothing new coming, too bad! Roy signed off with “Yes I Can”, by Styx, which I had never heard before but was a positive note to go out on. He will be missed but certainly made his mark on Canadian radio! Thank you Roy Green.
