MLB.TV Won't Give Canadian Fans The Blue Jays

MLB.TV, the online streaming service from Major League Baseball that allows viewers to stream out-of-market games for a fee, won't be of much use to Blue Jays fans again this season. I'm sure this isn't new, but not only has the service raised its rates this year, it confirms that Canadian baseball fans will strike out when it comes to being able to see the Blue Jays.

According to The Streamable website:

"Canadian fans will once again be blacked out from watching Toronto Blue Jays’ games on MLB.TV, after changes made in 2020. Instead, Blue Jays’ games will be available to stream on Sportsnet NOW. "

This policy has been in effect since 2020. As a fan, it would seem not worth ponying up the $140 or so to get this package, unless your home team isn't Toronto and you want to follow them.

The link above is from 2020. I think MLB may have made some changes with their streaming.

At least on the radio side, SportsNet seems to be suggesting that Jays radio broadcasts will be available to stream on the SportsNet app:

(From: https://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/baseball/article-buck-martinez-to-return-to-blue-jays-broadcast-booth-after-considering/ )

"For fans of the old-fashioned experience of listening to a ball game on the radio, but who may no longer own an actual radio, Sportsnet announced it had finally secured the rights to distribute its Blue Jays radio broadcasts through online platforms, including sportsnet.ca and the Sportsnet Now service. With a growing number of people listening to audio through smart speakers, fans who didn’t have radios had been stymied when they tried to tune in to an online stream and discovered they were blocked during Blue Jays games from listening to the live Sportsnet radio programming."

You're both right and wrong. The link in the quote is from 2020. The article link itself is from Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2023, and has 2023 in the headline.

That's where the quote in the article comes from. Apparently, the Jays are the only ones who aren't a part of MLB.TV, at least not in Canada.

Rogers is gaining a monopoly over streaming the properties it has the rights to.  The NHL Live app this season in unavailable in Canada.  You need Sportsnet Now.  That is messy because TSN has the regional rights to most Canadian teams making many games unavailable unless you also get TSN Go.  TSN is also introducing TSN+ which is a separate service that you can pay even more for but won't be available on mobile.  It's a giant, expensive mess for the average spots fan who used to be able to have one subscription per league.  Now you may need three to see every game in any given sport.

I have Rogers Sportsnet Now. The only games that are blacked out are Leaf games that are available locally in the "Leafs Region" west of Belleville. I watched the Chi/Mtl game several nights ago which was on TSN2 only in the "Habs Region" The NHL66 site still works with a VPN set outside of North America. You just have to find a country the NHL has yet to block.
