Advertising Bonanza During US Mid Term Elections

According to the Wall Street Journal $7.5 billion has been spent on advertising so far for next weeks mid term elections in the US.

In Nevada alone well over $100 million has been spent over the past two months.

Local television stations across the US have benefited in particular from this record amount of ad spending.

In California (where I am at the moment), about 80-90% of the advertising on the big four affiliates are election related. In California specifically, there are a number of propositions on the ballot, and ads related to the propositions make up at least half of the election ads.

On KNSD (NBC San Diego) earlier, there were 3-4 commercials per break related to the election, and 0-1 other commercials, either for the local Toyota dealers or for a local plumber.

It’s not this bad in Washington, where there’s fewer, if no propositions there.

Many of the ads I have seen have dealt specifically with the abortion issue.

Re: Advertising Bonanza During US Mid Term Elections

Actually watched an hour of the Today show this morning from 8:25 until 9:30am.  Interesting to note that all of the commercial breaks were local, no network ads.

Every commercial break had at least one or two ads for Gardner White which is a mattress and appliance chain in Michigan.  In the hour I counted 14- thirty second political ads, all for politicians, propositions or candidates running in Detroit and area.

The claims were unbelievable, but generally had graphics to verify when, where and who made the claim.

One candidate who has dealt with mental issues apparently tried to kill her children and herself  while driving the car. Throughout the commercial is the sound and graphic of a cuckcoos clock.

Another ad claimed a candidate told police he only had one drink, but blew over twice the legal limit after  an accident with a motorcycle. The cyclist needed to have a leg removed later in hospital. This person who is running for re-election has made drunk driving charges easier to hide.

A candidate for governor believes that chips have either been implanted in people or will be soon without their knowledge, that January 6th was not an insurrection, schools are government indoctrination centers, and no to abortion under any circumstances.

One running for re-election has consistently voted for higher paycheck taxes, increased taxes on cell  phones and insurance.  This person was charged with refusing to pay his own taxes and his wages were garnished.

Still another person for re-election helped to award millions in government defense contracts to her husbands company and then tried to cover this up. Also they have supposedly ruined the Michigan economy where people have seen retirement savings vanish because of tax increases and mismanagement.

Another ad claims that a candidate who is running for governor would allow drag queens into the classroom, that children should be allowed to change their sexual identity without parent approval or knowledge, and pedophiles should be allowed in schools.

Anyway these are just a few of the ads running right now on Detroit TV and only one station.   Two of the 14 ads in the hour were straight forward and not bashing anyone or passing blame.  The other 12 generally had a very accusatory tone with unflattering photos and graphics of opposing candidates and  dramatic music.

None of the ads were repeated during the hour, so 14 different political ads in only one hour, and all of these ads are playing on all Michigan/Detroit stations other than PBS.   In addition to the Gardner White ads there were about six other non political  ads.   Local TV in Ontario can only dream of a windfall of revenue like this.

Good luck voting on Tuesday folks.  I don't know how Michiganders could keep everything straight.

Pretty much all the ads from Democrats in CA that aren’t related to propositions are related to abortion. The one exception is one related to inflation that features a bunch of bulls, because apparently the Republican plan to fight inflation is “bull”.

The Republican ads in CA are all fairly vague and reek of “we know we won’t win here but we have to have an ad anyways”.

I watched PBS last night and it was a welcome break from the election, even if there was a pledge drive on.

Washington’s ads are heavily related to abortion, though one Republican ad criticizes Biden’s student loan forgiveness program.
