Global News' Thanksgiving Turkey

Did anyone else see Global's 5:30 PM newscast on Thanksgiving Day? It was the TV equivalent of The Poseidon Adventure - an absolute disaster. Many of their prerecorded stories failed to run, with the dead air being blamed on some problems in the control room.

In the final instance, they went to Sean O'Shea live giving his intro to a consumer story. When he finished, he stood there. And stood there. And stood there. It was an agonizing 8-10 secs. while they tried to get his story to air. But it never happened. (And for those who've never worked in TV news, 10 seconds of a live camera focusing on you is an eternity, especially when you have nothing left to say.)

Anchor Alan Carter then came back on and apologized one more time for whatever the glitch was that had plagued the entire half hour, before mercifully signing off.

But it didn't end there. Instead of Global Toronto's 6 PM news, they went straight to Global National, which normally airs at 6:30. What happened when the show ended? They immediately reran it at 6:30, the first and only time I've ever seen that happen.

I recall in some previous threads people noting problems with CHEX and other broadcasts, perhaps originating out of Global Toronto. Whatever is going on over there, it appears at least on Monday, they still didn't have it fixed. And it was a major mess.

Alan Carter's new closer involves apologising for the mess, with a look of both frustration and inevitability on his face. And Global News Peterborough still drops to black several times per newscast.

Re: Global News' Thanksgiving Turkey

I thought this was going to be about that time Bill Bramah (?), an elderly reporter in the 70s and 80s, tried to report from a farm on Thanksgiving only to have the turkeys drown him out with gobbles whenever he tried to speak.

I thought it was going to be a WKRP live birds and the helicopter riff.
