Live from NORTH YORK

CTV news at noon was live from North York today, not Scarborough.
If they were live from the Shell Gas station across the street, it would be Scarborough.
Close, but Victoria Park separates North York from Scarborough.

I hope they don't go to Steeles avenue and say they're in Toronto
when they'll actually be in Markham or something.

Re: Live from NORTH YORK

Standing on the south side of Steeles would be in Toronto. North side Thornhill/Vaughn etc.

Re: Live from NORTH YORK

I have personal experience with this, once trying to get a malfunctioning traffic light serviced on the north side of Steeles. The buck passing was incredible. 311 said to call Vaughan. Vaughan said to call 311. Back and forth it went, with nothing ever getting fixed.

Finally, I got hold of someone with the City of Toronto who confirmed that, for whatever reason, ANYTHING directly involving Steeles on either side is the sole responsibility of the City of Toronto - even if it's on the Vaughan side across the street. The instant you turn off of Steeles to another road, then it becomes Vaughan's issue.

I remember finally getting through to someone at 311 who dispatched a crew to fix the issue. But when the guys in the truck found out they were fixing something on the other side of Steeles, they turned around and went back, cancelling the repair, insisting it wasn't their problem. And then I had to start the process all over again. The 311 service apparently doesn't even have Vaughan cross streets on their maps when they look on their computers. So you have to figure out the nearest North York street and tell them that as a location.

Very frustrating and in typical government bureaucratic fashion, it took days to get resolved.

But the myth of a divided Steeles persists and anyone who lives near that street has probably experienced the "it's-theirs-not-ours-to-fix" syndrome.

Willowdale THIS!!!
Agincoourt THAT!!!
North York is still the North York part of Toronto. Always has been, the same way that Willowdale was never a city, but people who live there called it Willowdale.
North York is still North York and Scarborough is stll Scarborough.
