This is a very bizarre story about a large group of car owners in Washington State who one day mysteriously discovered they couldn't turn their radios off an NPR station. In a very weird malfunction, drivers of certain Mazda 3's discovered their radios were permanently stuck on KUOW-FM, a local public station.
Rebooting the system didn't work, and neither did turning off the car and starting it again. The dial simply would not move. Now engineers and radio specialists are trying to figure out what happened and how to stop it. I wonder if station owners are also looking into this, hoping they can literally command a captive audience!
As an inveterate station switcher, this would be my worst nightmare if I were on the road. Imagine being stuck on say, CBC Radio 1 or CHIN-FM. My head would explode, especially if I had a long way to go. Is there a local station that would make you crazy if you suddenly discovered you couldn't switch to something else?
(Full disclosure - I actually drive a Mazda 3 and am within a week or two of ordering another one. So far, there's no word from any other city about this happening but what a strange glitch.)
You’re listening to KUOW … like it or not: Mysterious glitch has Mazda drivers stuck on public radio

The station itself is having some fun with this story on its website.
A mystery we couldn't resist: Why is KUOW causing Mazda stereos to glitch?

Could you imagine this glitch happening to Dodge Rams?

Here's the song KUOW should put on repeat: The Isley Brothers' "I Turned You On, But I Can't Turn You Off."

My nightmare would be having my radio being stuck on CHFI in December.

My guess: Many NPR stations transmit within their analog signals a tone that can adjust your radio's time. I'm guessing something about that feature is crashing/locking the radios.
(Locally, WTSS 102.5 will set select radios' clocks)

Anyone able to decipher this from that article?
A few weeks ago cellphone companies — and KUOW — switched to a 5G signal.

Sounds more like the station's RDS signal, which is transmitted as a 57 kHz subcarrier, and Mazda's infotainment software are not cooperating... perhaps there's a tiny glitch in the RDS data that the Mazdas don't like?
Knock on wood, haven't had something like this happen in our 2019 GMC Terrain.
