A Right Wing Messenger Who Gets A Daily Slice Of GTA Radio Airtime

Where do you think you'd hear a show that starts with these assertions?

-The Coronavirus was a weapon unleashed by China to deliberately get Donald Trump out of office and

-Trump didn't lose the election, it was stolen from him by the Democrats, And there's lots of evidence to prove it.

Rush Limbaugh? Mark Levin? Fox News? Nope. The answer is Sauga 960!

Those were the opening remarks on Tuesday's Marc Patrone radio show on CKNT. I knew he was very conservative (although he seems to hate Erin O'Toole) but I never realized how far off the track he's gotten on some subjects.

He's the only host in Canada I know who has Maxime Bernier, Mike Duffy and Joe Warmington on his show as regular guests. And on Tuesday, he did a very sympathetic 15 minute interview with turfed Tory Derek Sloane.

The former CRTC Commissioner and CTV Halifax reporter certainly has a right to his opinions. (And I do mean "right!") But sometimes he crosses a line I never thought I'd hear on Canadian radio. He often makes Jerry Agar sound like a member of the NDP.

As far as I know, he's the only host in local radio whose show starts with a disclaimer that his opinions are strictly his own. I started out finding some of his topics interesting, but he's gotten progressively more bizarre in the past few months. And I wonder if that disclaimer will protect the owners if he finally steps over the line.

Meanwhile, it seems there's been an issue with a talk show in Buffalo, on what is a station that normally plays The Fab Four and The Rolling Stones.

“I have learned that WECK radio is a station that listeners want to escape from politics. It's a happy place on the dial. So if you like politics, WECK may not be your station, but if you like the Beatles, Elvis, Dave Clark Five, etc, WECK is your station.”

WECK owner Buddy Shula said Capitol attack led to putting Republican Assemblyman's show on hiatus

Another sign of the great divides on both sides of the border.

Re: A Right Wing Messenger Who Gets A Daily Slice Of GTA Radio Airtime

Marc Patrone's show opens with "Trump didn't lose the election, it was stolen from him by the Democrats, And there's lots of evidence to prove it. "

If only someone...anyone...would present said evidence in one of the 60+ courts where they were given an opportunity to. Nope. Okay then, will you present it to the media? Nope. Write it in the snow? Nope. https://cdn.boardhost.com/emoticons3/ninja.png

I guess it's a secret.

Oh, and perhaps Patrone hates O'Toole because O'Toole is not alt-right-hate enough for him. Remember when they said that liberalism was a mental disorder? Man, those libs are just entry-level crazy compared to these conspiracy advocates.

God help this country if we do as unfortunately we usually do, and follow America from a just few footsteps behind.

Re: A Right Wing Messenger Who Gets A Daily Slice Of GTA Radio Airtime

"Another sign of the great divides on both sides of the border."  Huh??  I think these so called great divides are mostly on one side of the border,  and they run deeper, are much more widespread and entrenched.  I think a mistake to imply that their are parallels or many similarities between the two.

Marc Patrone is hardly a mover or shaker in broadcasting circles and is not a major influencer.  He is on a station that few people listen to or are even aware of.

Now I don't need to stay up late to listen to Coast to Coast.  I can just listen to CKNT

Could it be a savvy programming decision that picks up free publicity from other media?

No, I've listened on several occasions. He really believes what he's saying.

Never (ever) thought the day would come that I'd post the following:

I agree with Chrisphen.    It's show business.

P.S. -- Andrew Bell of BNN Bloomberg has a favorite term that would (in my opinion) apply here   "It's theatre"

It may well be, but in this age of a multitude of gullible people who, demonstrably, are willing to pick up weapons and invade the US Capitol, could not this stuff at least be labelled "show business", "theatre", or "poisonous buffoonery" on an hourly basis?

Did anyone notice the Canadian flags in the mob on January 6th. Never think that the crazies aren't already here.

There's a fairly easy test for this - if they make weak minds weaker, then they have no business being on air. Perform on the street corner with the rest of the crazies and starving artists.

Re: A Right Wing Messenger Who Gets A Daily Slice Of GTA Radio Airtime

Trying to pass lies off as theatre and entertainment is wrong just like those that think freedom of speech means you can say whatever you want with no accountability. Lying is lying, and who cares if he really believes in what he is saying.  It is either accurate or not, right or wrong.

He is just trying to make a name for himself, and CKNT is doing the same by having him on the air.  Both think that since this type of radio is not usually heard in Canada there must be an audience for it.  So far, doesn't sound like it or at least not in very large numbers.  I have never heard of anyone in radio, even my radio friends say anything about Patrone's show or even CKNT for that matter.   The only time I have heard anything about either is on here.

I should also add: Acts such as willingly granting public airwaves to waterheads who flood the discourse with bullshit should be punishable.

"I'm an Entertainer" is the last refuge of dickbitch talkers when they realise there are material consequences to their shtick.

I've listened to him off and on for many, many months. (I like to tune in to a lot of different hosts, even those I may not agree with.) I'm absolutely convinced this is not an act. He really, truly believes what he says, especially when it comes to the U.S. election "being stolen."

That's the equivalent of yelling FIRE in a crowded theatre, although in the case of CKNT...maybe not so crowded.

Reminds me of early in my career. A Lake Simcoe marina had a massive blaze overnight, and I was summoned from my slumbers to cover it for the Orillia daily. I basically took notes and talked to people while million-dollar yachts burned (they were being stored over the winter). We got a complaint in the morning that the reporter down there seemed to be enjoying the event. Ah, the good old days...

Re: A Right Wing Messenger Who Gets A Daily Slice Of GTA Radio Airtime

Nah, it's not "theatre." Patrone's not capable of that.

If 960's not Oldies or silent by the end of the year I'll eat my hat.

Re: A Right Wing Messenger Who Gets A Daily Slice Of GTA Radio Airtime

One way to stop a fire is to deprive it of oxygen. But too many media organizations are guilty of screaming "FIRE!", while pouring gasoline on it. Makes for great ratings. There IS an inherent need in identifying  falsehoods so education, to my mind, is key: People need to be taught to get information from a multitude of sources to root out bias. But social media (which I believe punches way above its weight)  has lowered attention spans and expectations, making that a tall order.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm putting on my fedora and going out to the front lawn to yell at kids.

Re: A Right Wing Messenger Who Gets A Daily Slice Of GTA Radio Airtime

And on it goes. On Wednesday, one of Patrone's first guests was a doctor who, incredibly, is an anti-vaxxer, raising doubts about the COVID vaccine.

It's like there's a schedule of extreme right wing positions you must take and he's going down the list, touching them all. Incredible and more than a little irresponsible in the middle of a world-changing pandemic.

November 3, 2020, followed by outrageous lies from a sulking, defeated candidate, echoed by a political party that was hijacked by seditionists and malcontents, and believed by millions of gullible "patriots" many of whom are willing to burn a democracy down for their demagogue, and climaxed by the January 6, 2021 sacking of the U.S. Capitol.

That's what happened to it.

Re: A Right Wing Messenger Who Gets A Daily Slice Of GTA Radio Airtime

I'm no fan of Trump - he isn't fit for dogcatcher, much less president. But that's not the point. Who decides what can be said, what thoughts can we express publicly? Do we revert to the Soviet Union model where dissenters got a one-way ticket to the Gulag? I hope not, but we must be careful how much we rein in free speech.

This very forum banned Ziggy & cGrant for their constant  stream of toxic BS that soiled the forum & caused some members to leave in disgust.   Was that wrong?  I say "No" .. the good of the all takes precedence on the "rights" of the few deplorable individuals.  There's too many gullible people out there who embrace BS conspiracies.  There's a social contract of civil responsibility that needs not pander to those who deal in proveable lies & virulent, toxic spew.

Re: A Right Wing Messenger Who Gets A Daily Slice Of GTA Radio Airtime

I have the same concerns as Dale. Sure, right now, the extreme right is being censored. The question is what happens when the pendulum swings (as it inevitably will) and all of a sudden it's the other side that's being muzzled? What happens when something you passionately believe in gets censored because someone somewhere doesn't agree with you?

I hate the old cliche of "slippery slope" but if it ever fits, it's here. In other words, be careful what you wish for.

No one should be allowed to foster or promote violence or hate, but there's something to be said for the old policy of issuing a fact check on a troublesome Tweet or a statement, to correct the record. Everyone gets their say - but the facts speak louder in the long run and hopefully, that's the side that will eventually win the day.

Re: A Right Wing Messenger Who Gets A Daily Slice Of GTA Radio Airtime

The extreme right in the US also has been playing the game of deflection, not taking responsibility and portraying themselves as the victim for a long time.

"The mainstream media is not telling you the truth, the election is rigged against us, government is corrupt and we will drain the swamp, the democrats are crooks and they are coming to take away your guns, the dark state is taking over, the US will be a failed socialist state like Venezuela if you vote for the Democrats"...etc...etc..etc and this is the more moderate "clean stuff."

The extreme right has not really being censored. Maybe it's more difficult to broadcast their one sided lies and they need to work harder now, but they still have avenues to do this. What really is happening is that the far right is finally being called out.  They have been losing support, and in FOX's case ratings have been sliding.  And they don't like it, right now they are going back to the old game of deflection and blaming others, telling half truths and on occasion outright lies.

These guys only like democracy when it goes their way, when they call the shots and if it's easy.  When they need to explain their lies, or why Mexico didn't pay for the pathetic excuse of a wall, we see they have no game.  And just like their failed leader, it's never them, it's always the other that is wrong and the reason things didn't work out.  Amazing that they talk so much about freedom and don't seem to know anything about responsibility, telling the truth and admitting mistakes.
