Buffalo News Remembers WGR Talk Show Pioneer John Otto

He was a talk show pioneer on a music radio station. And if you listened to him for any of his 37 years on air, he was incredible.

On the radio, on the telephone with John Otto

At one time, his show began with a very memorable stand-up routine intro, which you can hear here.

"He signed off with his signature “I’ll be with you” on a Friday, went to the hospital on Saturday, and died early Monday. He was 70 when he died in 1999. "

That night, when WGR personnel discovered he'd passed away, they aired a tribute show to the dean of Buffalo talk radio hosted by PD Jim Pasterick and Tom Bauerle. It was held - when else? - in his regular longtime late night time slot. The show, from Dec. 6, 1999, is archived here.

In the Mid 80's he devoted his Thursday edition of Extension 55 to single people. Initially called Desparate and Dateless and later renamed Single And Searching, it was immensely popular. Many of the callers were from the GTA.
