Legendary Radio Station Traces Its Own 95 Year History Online

It's interesting how some stations ignore their own history - we've noted CFRB choosing not to acknowledge its own 90th birthday here -  while others embrace it. KDKA Pittsburgh will turn 100 years old in November and is spending the entire year celebrating that fact.

And now another legendary American broadcaster is patting itself on the back for its own longevity - WSM, Nashville. The place that invented The Grand Ole Opry has been around since October 1925, when it was started by an insurance company, with the call letters being initials of its slogan "We Shield Millions."

Today it remains perhaps the most famous country formatted station in the world and dozens of artists credit their success to the place. And in tribute to that legacy, it's tracing its own background on its website. Worth a look if you're interested in this kind of thing.

Interesting that Pat Sajak did an afternoon shift there. Also surprised that the station did not become a full time Country station until 1980. Only being able to hear the station at night, I just assumed the format was 24/7.
