It's all hockey all the time!

In my day we watched Hockey Night in Canada on Saturday Night's at 8 pm...and collected Opee-Chee Hockey cards with the amazing gum!!!

Oh and we'd read the Ottawa Journal sports pages to see if your team won the night before, but that was about it for hockey news and reporting... (I grew up in Ottawa)

The NHL is releasing a series of 3 new hockey podcasts this season, plus you can watch a game 3 nights a week, watch Hockey Central at Noon or Leafs Lunch or the Leafs Channel, the NHL Channel, get Hockey News, download it, stream it, You Tube it...watch it on your mobile device...or in a bar..(jeesh cue a Dr. Seuss book) ...(In your car, or at a bar, you can watch hockey wherever you are)...lol...

So, now the NHL is launching a few new podcasts for you to tap into, just in case you haven't had enough hockey...

Here is more on the story

My question is...is this overload and with all of this content does it diminish the value of the product and the appeal of watching hockey all together?

My feeling is absolutely yes, but what's your take Big Yella?

Sure. There's a local viewpoint with Leafs TV, and the..."other stuff" with the NHL channel...

Re: It's all hockey all the time!

In the early days of HNIC, the owners of the Leafs and Canadiens were so nervous about how the tv broadcasts would affect attendance, telecasts began at 9PM, which meant viewers missed the entire first period and half of the second period. When owners realized that attendance had not been affected, they permitted HNIC to start at 8:30PM. Now viewers actually got to see the final minute or so of the first period. 1968 was the first year where regular season games were telecast from puck drop.

On learning about this, Auston Matthews reportedly dropped his drawers and mooned the reporter

Nope.  It ceased to exist when Rogers won the NHL rights.

The Chicago Blackhawks didn't allow TV coverage of home games until 2008, after owner Bill Wirtz died.

The Bill (Dollar Bill) Wirtz era ran from 1983-2008. His son Rocky took over the team in 2008 and instituted a policy of televising Blackhawk home games. WGN TV carried Blackhawk games from 1961-75. They may or may not have included home games. I dont know for sure.

How unpopular was "Dollar Bill?" Fans booed the Blackhawks tribute to him.

Re: It's all hockey all the time!

Bill Wirtz was unbelievable! And Leaf fans thought Harold Ballard was bad for removing the organ and making the seats smaller to squeeze more paying customers into MLG. My personal favourite was when the NHL ordered him to put players names on the back of their uniforms. He complied, to avoid being fined, by using dark blue lettering on the teams dark blue uniform. That experiment lasted only for two road games in Chicago and Long Island in early 1978. Another Ballard stunt he managed to pull off when the Beatles played at MLG in 1965. Harold ordered Gardens staff to turn the thermostats up so that it was sweltering in the arena, and then proceeded to shut off all the water to the drinking fountains, forcing patrons to purchase soft drinks. Conveniently, only large soft drink containers were available that night. That is cheap, sneaky and downright unethical. But that was Harold.

Re: It's all hockey all the time!

Veteran hockey analyst Darren Dreger, and former NHLer, current colour commentator/broadcaster Ray Ferraro, have just launched their "Ray and Dregs Hockey Podcast" and the first episode is a winner. Decent audio quality on this one too, which isn't always the case.

One can never have too much hockey content, but Peter Puck there's a LOT out there right now, instead of top notch shows across the boards, pun intended, it's getting to be W.H.A. quality level in some cases. Muffaraw Joe is right.

On the plus/minus side, we have options we can escape to, when talk ends up turning to "Is Austin Matthews distracted by the upcoming court date." and "Is Mitch Marner playing up to his contract." and "Is the Seattle Sassquatch a good handle for the new team." Sassquatch was suggested by an on-air sports radio personality, and he wasn't joking.
